$$$

He wouldn't earn writing royalties on a cover.

How has this become respectable? If they wanted to make a song that sounds just like that Marvin Gaye song, they should have just done a cover.
That is exactly how I feel.
They didnt steal any samples, they stole the entire vibe of the track.
And Id possibly buy that it was not intentional if say, Pharrell is a big fan.
Either way though, its just silly to not acknowledge the 'influence', and move on.

Im not a lawyer, but I dont see how they could possibly lose a court case.

To me, it sounds like a mash up of Marvin Gaye and Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison". "That girl is Blurred Lines..."
I think you may have just identified Pharrell's core hit-maker algorithm. :hihi:

Being "inspired" by something and then rebuilding it almost verbatim from scratch is possibly the least imaginative thing you could do. It's common to take inspiration from stuff you like, nick techniques, chord sequences, FX routings, do "homage", even samples and recontextualize them, but this is sad.

Just add naked women and profit.

It's natural. If he would add naked men, he would have only success in the gay scene...

+1
Way back, I used to do exactly that kind of copying- when I wanted to learn something.
But the projects were titled like "(ArtistX) Copycat", not "My Summer Single!!". :hihi:

To all y'all haters out there, here's Robin Thicke doing a better version of "Blurred Lines" with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots that sounds a lot less like Marvin Gaye:

Remember, don't hate, CONGRATULATE!

I like that version.
Looks/Sounds like a Sesame Street bit.

Geez...
Chip-beats+Toy xylophone+Woodblock...

That is "a sound".
There should be a name for that particular ensemble.

I hate people who call people haters. :hihi: NO, seriously I do.

Back on topic... Yeah, blatant ripoff.

Yes, Jimmy Fallon version is better and *a little* less like the Marvin Gaye version.

BBD Poison? Noooo, noo, no. I don't hear it.

Marvin Gaye version is still way better than all the above. Sad but true... thank goodness for all his partaking in the drugs. Some damn good stuff he came up with. Even the divorce album was amazing (but horrible and painful to listen to at the same time).

And lastly... His comment about it being inspired by a "genre" is bullshit. There was "Got to Give it Up" and there was "Got to Give it Up" so I don't know what genre he's referring to. I smell BS, that's all I'm saying.

Girl, I, must
(Blurred Lines...)
I sense something strange in my mind
Situation is (Blurred Lines...)
Let's cure it 'cause we're running out of time
It's oh, so (Blurred Lines...)
Relationships they seem from the start
It's all so (Blurred Lines...)
When love is not together from the heart

Alright, maybe I'm reaching. ;)

Never trust a big butt and a smile!

You mean where they elongate the word? If Poison was the only song to ever do that, then sure... but BBD has a lot of company there, so no.

Here's a group that beat them all to that (but again, not the first... just an example):

Not bad. They're no Robin Thicke, of course. :hihi:
