No, Surge is super fine!

So is Vital (even the free version): https://vital.audio/
Or OB-Xd (it's free for hobbyist use): https://www.discodsp.com/obxd/
Or Zebralette: https://u-he.com/products/zebralette/

I'm biased obviously, but I think Surge is definitely good enough and many folks have made pro quality music with it.

IMO you picked the right one for what you want. And mind you, there will soon (I guess next month?) be a new Surge version with an improved GUI (the worst aspect of Surge, again IMO)

Post

OTOH, if you are still learning the very basics of synthesis and need something easy to understand right NOW, I'd say Vital. It's GUI is undeniably great for that.

so i know everything about synths i just dont know how to glue it to do the best patches , phonec can not do good pads and is best for lofi vhs sounds which is does good , surge does look daunting and has far too many presets which is why i havent gone into it , but im looking at synthmasters sale and thinking do i need to buy it ? would surge be much harder to master ? once i get good at it will surge give me that large sound as serum or synthmaster seems to have like i said
i can make easy patches but never got into a complex synth i want to try know thanks for advice guys

Phonec can do pads perfectly fine..
Maybe stick with the basics for now and learn how to get as much as possible out just a couple of free synths.
Try some free ones and check how those feel. Vital is a good one.
I would say that Surge isn't the most obvious choice for a beginner, imho

Surge is a wonderful instrument. Very powerful and great support.

CHOOS kicks a%$ with Charlatan and Vital.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

I think Surge is a good Synth to get deeper into sound design... it's really a very capable synth.
If you want to get an impression what Surge can do, check out the playlist of the One Synth Challenge #122 for instance (link is on the Surge Homepage as well): https://soundcloud.com/kvrosc/sets/one- ... -122-surge
Please note - The tracks were done with an older, less capable version, of Surge more than 2 years ago. But I think you can still get a good overview about what Surge can do.
Here's my contribution, a more cinematic tracks inspired by "For Whom The Bell Tolls": https://soundcloud.com/p-e-t-e-r-h/prev ... e-upon-you
