I love the title of this thread - don't look at the price tag.

I'd also love to set up a blind synth-tasting competition.

say ... take 20 blindfolded musos and feed them some real Moog, some Triangle and some Vanguard and maybe some ManyStation presets, or whatever synth blah blah, and see which sounds people thought sounded the best.

I'd bet there'd be a few surprises in there

Maybe for people who just want pads or something - but there are some bits of the Buchla systems that don't have equivalents really for pure FSU potential. Can't imagine Triangle or Vanguard being as flexible as even a small modular system.

My uni has a huge Doepfer modular system, larger than that. It's top-fun to play with, but I feel myself lusting for the Buchla more. That thing is gorgeous, just gorgeous.
