In case any of you didn't know, many Windows VST plugins can be made to function under Linux.

Maybe if someone wrote drivers for decent hardware but as it is exclusive to second-rate machines I don't see any point.neverwhere2012 wrote:ummm.... OSX?
As someone mentioned, a lot of VSTi will run under Linux, there's a compatibility list somewhere. Unfortunately I haven't seen a host that is within light-years of tempting me away from ORION [pun intended]. Whilst Linux is undoubtedly a great OS for anyone with a little naus, for guys who need to spend all day on the phone to India [Dell, was it?], its going to be just as bloated and slow as Windoze. And its not just audio app's that it lacks, there are lots of things that you can't do to any decent standard [unless you wanna shell out thousands for new software]. Linux seems to have stagnated more than somewhat in recent times which is a shame because it is a great alternative for a lot of people.

I've had a mac(OSX) and a PC(WIN2k) for about the same amount of time. I've had to reinstall the os on the PC dozens of times, but I've never had any problems with the Mac. I've gotten all sorts of viruses on the pc but none at all on the mac. I've had 3 hard drives die on the pc, but none on the mac.
In fact, I think the only problem I ever had on the mac was I had to force quit Peak... ONE TIME!!!!!!
Plus, the mac cpu is 1/4 the speed of the pc's and they perform equally.
I'm sorry, but based on personal experience... I'll take OSX any day.

linux is more and more making its way from servers to desktop machines. This as well includes audio.
You might want to check out http://www.agnula.org/ for a specialized audio distribution that shows what's possible. Now if big companies would port their stuff....

I don't have XPpro, but I use it at work on 2 different machines, and I've had no end to problems there either, and thats in just 5 months of working there. I've had to call computing resources like every three weeks to fix problems with it. I had to call them once when our time keeper software stopped working after I did a disk cleanup, because it deleted some driver. A f**king disk cleanup!!!!!FaX wrote:Sure O'Malley but at least compare OSX too XPPro for fair comparison Windows 2000 was a piece of shit if you ask me.

beos???
http://www.yellowtab.com/
but well for audio production there is no real alternative to windows xp imho...
personally i did not expirience crashes and did not have to reinstall the os all the time...strange...
and well the old nt servers at work run for 2 years constantly - so maybe i am just lucky.
win9x was hell agreed - but NT and lately 2000 & XP are rock solid (again imho).
virus and spyware problems never troubled me either... all it takes is a firewall & a decent antivirus application (and using alternative webbrowsers & email clients).
user error is imho the no1 cause of malfunctioning windows systems...

Linux is a great power tool, its the most customizable OS it would be v.usefull to have audio apps run on it.
Oh and did i mention BeOS!!!Get coding for BeOS!!!! Its the fastest OS i've had on my pc! If only the company didnt go bankrupt

Why? I've never had to reinstall Windoze, ever. I used to do it fairly regularly to keep everything trim, taut and terrific but I've got so much grunt to spare these days that the last time I installed an OS on a working PC was when I upgraded from Win2k to XP about 2 years ago. Installing hardware and software is no harder on PC or Mac, they both just work. I don't have any anti-virus software and I've never had a virus. And its not just because I look after my PC because a) I don't and b) I use Dell and HP computers at various places of work and have similarly few problems. Ever. OTOH, I was talking to the guy who installed 11 brand-new G5's at Channel 7 when I was there earlier this year and he was telling me that he won't upgrade their machines to Tiger [or whatever the latest version of OSX is] because he knows that none of the software will run and he'll have to completely rebuild them all. Fabulous operating system, that.o'malley wrote:I've had a mac(OSX) and a PC(WIN2k) for about the same amount of time. I've had to reinstall the os on the PC dozens of times
