Brief comments part 2 ( If I forgot someone, sorry, let me know.. )
GregJazz: I remember really liking yours. Top notch. I can’t redownload it right now for some reason. Please fix that so I can download it again.
Khepira: Dance for oil. I like the drum beat and the brass parts, but not crazy about the vocal bit (ee-aille-ah), or the lead synth sound.
Respirator: waltz: Simple and enjoyable. I like the way you panned the instruments. A little too repetitive.
Vurt: Dance or die it’s your choice. There is no melody. It’s just a bunch of noise to me, sorry. I actually stopped listening half way through. It was starting to give me a head-acke.
Aieda-cin: Forrage. Relaxing/atmospheric piece. Makes me shake my head, but not dance. I like it.
Ugo: Bonfire. Nice one. Not the kind of music I listen to, but well done.
Rsmus 7: Sounds like video game music. It’s a little too cheesy for my taste… I can’t see myself dancing to this..
JT: The return of Fonk’nstein: I like this. With some real brass, it would be killer. Definitely danceable.
Beardedone: Once the drums came in, I started enjoying it more. It was a little too all over the place before that ( but I know that’s your style ).
Jaidy: I like it. The way it ended wasn’t that great. Could have worked on that some.
Herodotus: Frogs don’t dance. This one got me from the start. It’s simple, but it’s got everything I like. Percussions, bells, atmospheric sounds.. You could develop it even more, but I like it.
Ixox: Un tout dernier tango. Very nice work. Love it when the vocals kick in. Good call singing on this one!
Freeztar: So Danco Samba. Interesting song. Not one of my favorites so far, but it’s not bad.
Mchlwlsn:Seeker. I like it. Nice work. Maybe try adding some brass hits on it. I think it would make it even better.
Utm: Feedback and Oscillate. This is cool. Definitely danceable. Not what I would usually listen to, but I enjoyed it.
Kovacs: What I want to do. I like the music in the background, but it sounds too muffled or something . I am not feeling your voice. Sorry.
Andy: Summer in the sand. Perfect to put me in a happy mood. Relaxing. I like it.
Barnadine: A man of grace. Very nice composition. Catchy. Very emotional piece. For some reason I want you to sing in French on this one.. any chance of that happening?
MG505: can’t find server.
Joenco: Go Jeanne. Pretty cool. Not too crazy about the lead synth sound. Nice drum work. I really like the dramatic orchestral bit. Nice touch.
Nikp2000: The Bollywood hillbillies. Interesting track. Not my kind of music though..
Techbot: Ballam de na na… I like it a lot. The drums and guitar the most. A tad too repetitive, but it’s pretty catchy. I really like the second vocal parts ( sanduhm eenai? .. or whatever is being said.. lol.. )..
Mystahr: Summer’s breeze. I like this. Could be developed more though. Feels incomplete.
Scamme: It’s all synthetic. Nice piece. Definitely danceable J A tad repetitive. I don’t usually listen to this kind of music so what do I know...
Glooper: Disco Mission. Really like this one from the start. Crowd noise goes in well at the beginning .
Warbug: DOA. Very nice work. I love the intro/outro and great job with the Jungle/ragamuffin part..
Col G. Mc Loser: Not feeling it, sorry. Well recorded/mixed except for the vocals. They sound a bit too bland. I take it you don’t like to put effects on your vocals?
Kaze : Jinro and other spirits. Really cool. Unusual, which it makes it really interesting. Nice piece to sit back to. I guess I could dance to this, in a very unusual way J
Pepelogu: I feel for KVR. Very nice drums. I like the synths used as well. Definitely makes me want to dance. The vocoded vocals are a nice touch. Nice work.

From the start of page 4 to the current era:
Joenco/Go Jeanne - Okay, I admit it suprised me. I was settling in for two minutes of synth-twiddlin' dance - slightly whiny but nicely mutating lead; not especially memorable, but pleasant enough... Then you move off on a really interesting tangent. It's a great move, and my question is, why not sooner? You hit a much richer vein at 1:20, and I would have loved you to develop the whole disintegrating orchestra thing further. That section ends far too soon, gone before you know it. The coda seems overlong, as though extended mostly for the sake of hitting the two minute mark - just makes me think of all the extra time you could have spend on the weirdness. Let me know if you ever decide to expand this.
nikp2000/Bollywood Hillbillies - Excellent stuff. Sure, it gets sloppy in places (just adds to the charm), and the recording is pretty lo-fi (but who cares?). It's a great idea, done well. I really enjoyed it, and it'll probably get a vote from me. Easy review. Cheers.
Techbot/Ballam de nana Haydum De - Classy and eclectic. Interesting stew of influences, from the jazz scat vocals to the bigbeat-meets-India(?) percussion. And some great little downturns, where the bass works off a bit of steam while the rest of the song regroups. Obligatory nitpicking: you almost tire the vocal samples out, we never seem to get them in less than batches of eight. And the new vocal at 1:28 is too buried in the mix to have a real impact. But this is a great collage of sounds, with energy to burn.
mystahr/summer's breeze - The little percussive sounds are excellent, and I like how they carry on their own inscrutable conversation behind the main rhythm. Nice synth work, things evolving constantly to maintain interest. And a well thought out arrangement, the background swooshes playing well against the foreground sounds. It's got a cuddly but slightly creepy vibe I associate with that old song about teddybears having a picnic. Innocent little faces, but you can bet they're hatching some evil plan for world domination. This grows on me with every listen.
scamme/It's All Synthetic - If you're going to stick with a short 4 bar chord sequence for an entire song, you need lots of incidental variation, and there's quite a bit here. The guitars cut in to give things a bit of a jackboot edge, and other elements pop in and out enough to keep things from getting boring. But my personal taste would like to see you play up the more unusual elements of the song (e.g. the background noises around 0:28 ) and push it all in a more experimental direction. And change the chords from time to time. But as I've said before, I'm not the best judge when it comes to mainstream dance like this. Everything seems to be functioning within operational parameters.
Glooper/Disco Mission - You're a bit of a chameleon, aren't you? I'm impressed. Good hefty bass, and nice use of crowd sound. I'm probably laughably off the mark here, but that isn't you pitchshifted and effected for the main verse vocals, is it? The 'get your body' vocals (which probably aren't you
) wander off pitch a little, and aren't my cup of beverage, but are pretty much obligatory for this kind of song. This isn't necessarily a musical era I was eager to revisit, but it's a classy recreation, spiced up with a few modern twists which for some reason brought to mind Basement Jaxx. (P.S. What's a chav?)
warbug/DOA - Great underwater intro. And I really love the bass that comes in at 0:20. This has a great energy, and the vocals are a good match for the mood. Don't really have any technical criticisms, though once again, a bit of small variation to individual drum hits would spice up the percussion. On the shortlist.
Col.G/MC Loser - Whoa. Courageous 'tuning' on the guitar.
There's lots of interestingly stroppy stuff going on here... The only big problem was that I felt like I was missing out on half the song - maybe it's because I'm not American, but I found the lyrics pretty much indecipherable. And your lyrics are usually worth hearing too. I think I understood about two and a half words, max. Any chance of a lyrics sheet? Or a translation? Or just a vague clue what the song's about? But that didn't stop me enjoying the bit where you go all James Brown. Hunh! Heh.
kaze/Jinro and Other Spirits (Dance of) - 'Silly'? No way. You evoke a very nice mood here. Some of the timing gets a little bit sloppy for the elegance this kind of music seems to demand, but it does give things a vulnerable human dimension. The... shamisen? (I don't know my Asian instruments too well) - the one panned to the right that carries the bulk of the song - doesn't always integrate perfectly with the rest of the mix, and is sometimes programmed in ways that sound a bit more like keyboard playing than string playing. But these are small points. Very nice.
pepelogu/KVR - And last month's vocoder frenzy continues.
But that aside, I have to compliment you on your main beat. Tight, no-nonsense, and the sounds themselves are very solid and satisfying. Some more variation to the pattern would be good, but it's an excellent anchor for the song, and gives the spacier elements something physical to contrast with. (And don't worry about the vocoder thing, just a personal allergy of mine.)

Cheers, pheeleep. I think I know what you mean.pheeleep wrote:For some reason I want you to sing in French on this one.. any chance of that happening?
I doubt my French is good enough to come up with a translation that rhymes in all the right places. But if you or some other French speaker ever gets bored enough to translate the lyrics, I'd definitely give it a whirl. (My French accent is pretty bad too.

Thanks much for the reviews all!
Please don't take it amiss if I don't take part in the whole review swapping thing.
Commenting publicly on the work of another is just not something I feel personally comfortable with.
But it is a great part of the tradition here.
Carry On!!

I tend to agree here in the sense that I personally feel there is good content to try and bring this to a full song; which I most likely will after the month is over.pheeleep wrote:Mystahr: Summer’s breeze. I like this. Could be developed more though. Feels incomplete
Cheers for the words allready Barnardine; and even if it may feel a tad incomplete as pheeleep said, there is an incredible amount of things happening in the back, with the intention of growing slowly rather then have an initial bang, but be forgotten after a while. Cheers Techbot..
...
The vocals come from a few house tracks (4 in total).. where just the vocals were available... recorded from vinyl records. Had to pitch shift each track individually, cut up into section and audio warp slightly to get them to fit correctly and then EQ lots to get them to sound similar in character...
cheers barnadine and pheeleep for the reviews..
...
Chav is a sub species of human found in the UK.. they can be seen in most town centers throughout the UK, generally in small herds outside shopping centers. They are easily reckognizable because of their caps (commonly burberry) and shell suits... they are also known as townies...
