Hello,

I’m want to buy apple laptop especially for Computer Muzys. I have to chose between iBook G3 800 and PowerBook G4 500. Since CM runs only under OS 9 (and ist ok with me) I was thinking if it does make a sense to buy G4. Is it true that G3 800 might work faster under OS 9? I would prefer to have iBook because of it’s portability, but would be very happy for any advice first.

Thanks,
Piotr

Well... yes I've tried all sequencers ever made on this planeet and Muzys is the best of them :)

Now I use Logic on desktop G4 but would really like to get Muzys back while on a go.

DON'T select a computer and operating system just because you have Computer Muzys to run. There are quite a few cheap or free hosts which you can always pick-up once you have selected your platform.
I am on PC put I hear that OS X and the latest "Tiger" updates are much better for music than OS 9. Besides the newest music software may not be available for OS 9 but only for OS X and upwards.

If you are buying a new Mac it will only run OS9 in classic mode which is basically a virtual OS and not at all suitable for audio or midi. If you are buying a second hand Mac, make sure it can be booted natively into OS9. I would go for a G4 if you can - a G4 has approximately twice the power of its G3 equivalent.

I though Muzys was no more available ?

they are referring to computermuzys, (a stripped down version) which comes with every issue of computer music magazine (along with some other nice freebies)

Calum's right, but I've been runnining Muzys on my new iMac 2GHz in Classic with no problems. Get the Prosoniq ASIO Driver. I don't use outboard MIDI devices, just Audio and VST sound.

I'd get the Powerbook G4 if I were you, but the newest iBook looks pretty good these days (512MB RAM + built in Airport!).

Guys, he's gonna buy a used laptopo, so OS 9 will run native.

I believe the only advantage the G4 would have would be if CM Muzys is Altivec optimized, which I sorta doubt. Maybe more L2 cache as well. I'm guessing you're gonna use the lappie for more than just Muzys, so I'd recommend the ibook, since it does have a bit more 'raw' power for general tasks. But look into what video cards both have (again the ibook may be better since it's newer). Also, the Powerbook has a PCI card slot and possibly audio in, but the ibook doesn't. But since this isn't gonna be your primary system and you seem set on using Muzys, I'd say go for the ibook.

Hello,

Thanks for all advices. I decided to buy G3 800 iBook. Hope that it wiil be enough for OS9 audio applications.
I do not plan to install OS X on this machine.

I imagine any OS 9 application will run great on a 800 MHz G3. Most were coded for machines with far less power.
