I understand the role of compression in mixing and mastering, but I have yet to understand guitar players' fascination with compressor pedals. I have a Les Paul Standard and a Fender Super Reverb. I decided to try out a couple compressor pedals and brought one home--mainstream--nothing boutique. The one I am trying out is Line 6 Constrictor. Seems pretty good. I don't think it improves sound at all. It flattens and takes the life out of what comes out of the amp. It seems to hide minor picking flaws/mistakes. The only other pedal I have is a TS-9DX.
What am I missing? Would I get better results by ordering a higher end like a Carl Martin? Should I just go for a cheapy and if I want better compression with recording use one of my VST's?
Thanks for any and all feedback.

On guitar compression is typically used for funky clean stuff, with the attack set away from zero. This way you emphasize the attack, and it should pump a bit and increase the sustain.
Honestly, you can do without one. Only in some playing styles you benefit, and even then it's not that big difference.
