This was too pretty a combination to go past, and I'd been waiting for a chance to give my new camera (Fuji S5500) a run in "night vision" mode for a while.

I'm assuming the bright "star" to the above right of the moon is Venus, but what is the one at the far bottom right (you can only see it in the long picture)? I'm guessing either Saturn or Jupiter due to the brightness, perhaps one of you people who can read star charts could look it up. Same question goes for the bright one to the left. These were taken at 7pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (9am GMT) on September 7th 2005.

My Guess is that it is Jupiter ( the bright one) and the lesser one is Spica ( a 1rst mag star)Jupiter is in Virgo, and Spica is the main star in Virgo.

Did you take this at dusk?

BTW: NICE PIC!!

spot on, stars are suns; big burning, gassy things.

planets 'glow' like stars when the suns light hits them ie. illuminates them.

you'll find the brightest 'star' in the night sky is actually planet Venus.

and there ends my astronomical knowledge. :)

OK..posted on my astronomy yahoo grp I belong to and got an answer. I was half right

heres the answer:

===============

The bright orb to the upper right of the Moon is Venus, the smaller
dot to the left of the Moon is Spica, and the glowing orb below and
right of the Moon is Jupiter.
