Alright, I give up.

Can someone clarify what the Audition button in the MIDI track header (in manual Recording mode) does?

- Incoming MIDI notes are routed to the VSTi regardless of the Audition button setting.
- On Audio tracks, the incoming audio is only routed to the audio track output if the Audition button is On.

So:
- what is the MIDI track Audio button meant to do?
- is it broken?
- should it be there at all?

Post

For me it does exactly what it's meant to do:

With the audiotion button pressed, it allows me to audition what I do when alt-clicking notes in place. When it's de-pressed (is that the right term?) I hear nothing.

That's true for the Audition button up at the top of the window.

But I am talking about the one in the MIDI Track header when you set the track to manual Recording.

So, any ideas?

It enables midi preview (at least that's what it did the last time i used it) , just like the audio preview button does for audio recording ...
If it's set to a specific channel it so allows to preview a track even that it is not selected .
On the contrary: in auto mode you can only preview (automatically, so that's why there is no extra button) only the selected track .

Yep, that is what it used to do, but it still seems to allow preview/audition when it is turned off. ??

I find no bug there ...
It auditions then only when selected .

But it maybe shouldn't audition when selected ? Is that what you want ?

Post

on second thought , I agree it shouldn't audition when selected in manual mode and audition is turned off - since if you don't want it to audition and if it's e.g. the only track you have , there's also no way to unselect it .

this inspires to some FRs (OT) :

- unselect track(s) when clicked outside of track lanes (below tracks).
- select multiple tracks by ctrl-click / shift-click

Sorry for the confusion, this illustrates what I think my problem is:
- open a Sequencer,
- add a different VSTi to each track,

- select the first track, send some MIDI notes to it,
- there is no way you can turn off the Audition of the input, as there is no Audition button,

- set the second MIDI track to Manual Recording,
- select the second track, send some MIDI notes to it,
- there is no way you can turn off the Audition, as the Audition button does not work.

- the Audition button works when the MIDI track is _not_ the current track

So, I think there are two things to be done:
- a MIDI track in Auto Recording mode needs an Audition button
- and the Audition button needs to work when the MIDI track is selected as the current track.

Then Recording to the MIDI tracks will function in the same way as recording to Audio tracks.

And (FR) - recording MIDI CC to Envelope tracks - coming sometime?

Just for comparison, I think that the way it works in audio tracks is OK:
Current Track, Auto Recording: Monitor On > Sound, Monitor Off >> silent
Current Track, Manual Recording: Monitor On > Sound, Monitor Off >> silent

Not Current Track, Auto Recording: Monitor On > Sound, Monitor Off >> silent
Not Current Track, Manual Recording: Monitor On > Sound, Monitor Off >> silent
