kevink wrote:Look, I'm all for keeping this thread alive for as long as we can, but you guys gotta stop panicing about Guido. He's got a life. It's Spring vacation time in Europe. MilesTone is deeply cool. As a former sax player, I'm very, very eagerly waiting for a public beta of the sax model, as are a number of the rest of us. And when it surfaces, I swear, I will finally get a PayPal account just so I can make a contribution. But Guido's life is his own (I hope), and we are neither in a position to demand, nor to panic.
Yeah, this is basically what I was trying to say :P
A guy with serious GAS and lots of unused VSTs. But if I someday need them...

Indeed i hope hes having fun too and that nothing is wrong.

im a little superstitious, and it seems that in the history of acoustic modeling something always HAPPENS to stop development,, it almost reads like a mystery novel.

Just keeping this thread alive. Guido, how's it going?
"The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgement, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil." Solomon.

Guido sends his love from his new castle in the south of France after sellin' out to Arturia :P

Guido, all your plugs are great, and for those living on the economic edge they're a godsend! Not sure how much more dev is going into MilesTone, but here goes:

Beta 3 or 4 represents the zenith of one type of sound, a darker sound with a more modest attack. It may also be smoother in the upper register. The newer betas are brighter, but at times more synthetic. Finding a way to mix or morph between the darker b4 and a brighter beta might be good. I like the bright versions for sustained tones, but b4 can sound better on attacks and short riffs. With the brighter tone, high trilled notes can sound "Moogish" as one person called it. Maybe a little fingered porta would help smooth the high end. On short, fast riffs in late betas, the attack almost seems decoupled from the main note. Could the attack be a little shorter? And could it be randomized to sound on just 2/3 of the notes or so, or could this be adjustable? Guido's Tunisia demo was awesome, but the pronounced attack muddies up the lines and makes for a slightly flabby or rubbery sound, a little DX7-ish.

Close to where you already are there's probably a place where you get both the darker sounds of b4, and the brighter more present sustained tones of later betas, without the artificial quality in the high end that's starting to creep in with b5 at high velocities, and without the attack taking over the sound.

What I'm missing is that bright chorus sound you get from some analog or combi method trumpets, either produced by a chorus effect, oscillator detuning, or a little pulse width modulation. This might sound like heresy, but would you consider adding a simple chorus, and one or two analog oscillators switchable between sawstooth and PWM? ::ducking volley of rotten tomatoes::

Would you consider adding a short sampled "partial"? (That's what they were called on the Roland D50.)

I'm thinking how beautiful it would be if at low velocity, you heard some of that soft, whispery blowing sound Miles would get when he was phrasing absolutely pianissimo. A looped breath sample that only gets mixed in at low velocities? Like what Gunnare was saying.

I know you're really into pure physical modeling, but adding a little bit of sampling, analog, and fx might really turn this monsta loose!

I apologize to anyone who hates sampled brass and feels it has no place in the discussion. My point is that sometimes even a physically modeled instrument can take help from other technologies to fill out the sound and make it more versatile.

To prevent any samples from becoming a disaster as Tony feared, keep it programmable and use just a little - like an attack partial or looped breath noise at low velocities that can be dialed in on some presets. Same with the chorusing. Just a dash of seasoning, not a whole new plug.

If you do add a chorus, it would be nice to have a simple envelope for it, so maybe it doesn't affect the beginning of the sound, but only the sustain portion.

Another approach would be to think of Miles'Tone as a jazz trumpet only, and model another one - call it Mr. Bach - after the classical trumpet sound. Then find a way to put them both in one VSTi, with different expressive ways of mixing or morphing between them. The classical one should have a warm, clear, fanfarish tone with not so much "slouch."

Then if you have these two very different models or paradigms for what a trumpet can sound like, and you find a way to morph between them, you will have something even better than the current beta 6 of MilesTone, which is already something to be proud of.

Hey, some of these ideas may be wacky, but at least this post isn't another bump.

Rumor has it there's a UUencoded beta of the Guidophone posted on alt.aliens.binaries.

Telling people on a bulletin board not to demand or panic is like telling chimpanzees in a zoo to stop flinging poo at the spectators.

so who else thinks someone flipped him a few $k not to release it for n amount of time... not to disrespect what he's given us already.. soooo.. just 'thanks for milestone, guido' :)
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

I really dont think a keyboardist is gonna be of much help with modeled brass, they certainly have been no help so far.

portamento? chorus? pwm? analog oscillators??

way to ruin a good model.

Lol, this is so true!

Which is why so many samplers and physically modelled synths are so keyboard based... you have to really know the instrument and be able to play it well before you can make adequate samples or physically model it.

I've just downloaded and tried out Miles'Tone and I have to say its really impressive. The things that stuck out though (and I'm sure pleanty off people have said this). First I would love a better (well any) legato mode, if you are not super careful you get a hard-blowing/attack sound on each note I would love to be able to play nice smooth lines on this thing. Second it would be great if there was an adjustable release time as in its current state each note just cuts when you release it. Also if you are not playing it with a mute (and sometimes when you are) it sounds quite synth-y if the 'expression' is cranked but I guess there are limits to physical modeling. Anyway despite my nit-picking this baby is great, one of the best brass models I've used.

p.s. Can't wait for a sax, and based on the pitchbend sound of Miles'tone it would take much tweaking for a 'bone.

I guess part of the "group grief" in this whole situation is the recent absence of Guido. If he's got the "watch this topic" checked, then he should have been getting a bunch of emails that there were posts to this thread. I know I do, and I check to see what got posted. Even if he just popped in and said "Hi. Things are progressing, but taking longer than expected. Stay tuned." then we'd at least know he's still working at it and our collective angst and anticipation would be further stoked.

Now we're just wondering whether he's alive...

Post

Has anyone sent him an email or PM?

I did this afternoon - it was picked up in less than 30 minutes by someone so...

ZioKiller - please set these nice folks minds at ease. Please?

thanks,

Hey, wow this thread has grown incredibly from my last visit...

I'm ok, personally. It's my "thechnology" that needs some care... My internet connection is working bad (please avoid Tiscali!), my computer had little problems and I've blown some channel on my mixer, a Yamaha 01v (sold out "as is" and replaced by a Behringer DDX).
But mainly I'm very busy with my job, taking out almost 10 terrible hours daily, and the very little spare time I've left is useful for just 1 or 2 things... and sometimes I need some rest...

Also, oh well... I've been busy trying to learn to play sax (ehm... the very basic things...) and to understand its physics.

I was drawing the first draft of a GUI for the sax plugin, when my computer crashed before I could save the work. When these things happen I feel very discouraged and I need some time before starting everything from scratch.

Days should last 48 hours! :(
