SS2 is a great rompler ...

but it's not my "go to" rompler.
In my opinion SS2 needs some attention from IK. The content of SS2 is fantastic with great vintage synth samples, and the very useful elements section.
For starters, for me SS2 would be better with syncable LFO's and assignable key zones for each multi part.
Is there an update planned for SS2?

What is your go to rompler?
The content of SS2 is made by Sonic Reality by the way, not IK. But, SR and IK work together on the app as a whole and soon SS2 will have the syncable LFOs that SampleTank 2.1 has (as well as many other new features). By the way, if you do have SampleTank 2.1 (which you can even get as a discounted crossgrade being an SS2 owner here: http://www.esoundz.com/details/viewDeta ... ductID=259 ) you can also read the SS2 sounds and use syncable LFOs (as well as use the other sounds ST2.1 comes with). Just another option for building the ultimate "go to" rompler.
Ironically, for the reasons you described (great vintage samples etc.) it is a great "workhorse" source to turn to. That plus the variety of instruments, drums and everything else.

Yes, I'm running Sonik Synth 2 in Sampletank, and it's definately my "go to" sound source. The sound set included with Sampletank is a great addition as well. I've tried other things, but for reliability, ease of use, flexability, and overall sound quality, I'm very happy with that set up. I'm a sound junky! That's why I love eSoundz so much.

ST 2.1 is my go to Rompler since the upgrade because it now loads extremely fast. Unfortunately, when I tried to dump the SS2 library into ST2.1, it slowed down again, so I took out SS2 sounds. It is my hope that the coming SS2 upgrade will speed things up because SS2 is, in my opinion, a thing of beauty on its own. But I find I don't use it as much as I would like to because of the lack of speed.

I'm listening to a song I did two versions of: One with a piano sound from a friend's Roland hardware rompler, and one where he sent me the MIDI files for the piano part (same song though) and I assigned them to a grand piano in SS2.1. SS2.1 sounds much clearer & more dynamic.
I've browsed through a lot of the sounds that I got with SS2 and ST2, and many of them sounded excellent. Using them in a mix where it really counts confirms that.

Interesting that you say that. They ARE designed to be more mix ready as opposed to "sheen on solo listen" sounding like so many hardware workstations can be. Remember that hardware workstations need to "cut through" the noise in the keyboard room and be IN YOUR FACE so you think it is impressive. they also need to be caked with effects to mask the imperfections of downsized samples to fit onto hardware chips. But, that full spectrum that might sound good on its own often doesn't sit well in the mix, maybe stands out or takes over too much. For some styles of music that is good but for flexibility you sometimes have nothing else you can do with it because if you were to dial it back you might not get such a natural sound. Of course one can take Sonik Synth 2 and effect it out, hype it up and put it in your face. You can always build up that way. But, really, that is best to do TO your track. That's part of producing. Sonic Reality tries to make tools that are great for songwriting, performance AND producing/engineering. We're not just trying to KNOCK YOUR SOCKS off with something that in context of music may not even be usable. I mean, there's a little of that always but it isn't our focus. Our focus with these workstation plug-ins is to just make it convenient and value-packed. To increase your work flow and give you tools (the same tools any of us would use) to shape your track and make it your own.

Just out of curiousity, are there any upgrades planned for SS2? Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with it...just curious.

Well, yeah we did work on the Motif rack's sounds. I do love my Motifs. However my main love for it is the weighted keys and the immediacy of it. Sound-wise I use Sonik Synth a lot more. But, Sonik Synth is also a lot larger in size overall. For me, having a Motif keyboard and Sonik Synth 2 compliment each other well. If you already have a Phantom then maybe getting Sonik Synth 2 is a good choice, especially considering the price as well. That said, nothing wrong with adding a Motif rack to your set up. Oh, well there's the total recall in your sequencer to consider as well and some other benefits. I know we MADE Sonik Synth 2 but personally I wouldn't want to be without it. Seriously. I use it all the time. Many people do.

It doesn't get as much attention as Sampletank because that's IK's 'flagship' product, but for sheer volume and diversity of sounds (something like 5000 different patches right out of the box) you can't beat it.
Plus, the sounds are just beautiful. The piano alone is worth the price of admission. My personal favorite is the piano 'pad' sound which seems to go nicely with just about everything.
Add to all that the fact that SS2 contains the largest collection of vintage synth sounds, plus a hefty dose of drums and rhythm 'elements,' and you have one powerful machine.
Heck, Squids and his crew programmed the sounds, so you know they're great. And he promises the update later this year will make 'em even better.
