BONES wrote: For the recently arrived, for the last 5 years it has been the accepted terminology around here to describe the big boys as "sequencers" and to use terms like "virtual studio" for the newer applications which are more focussed on working with plug-in instruments than with straight MIDI and audio. Somewhere along the line much of this was supplanted with the catch-all "host" but if its too hard for you to work out on your own, I hope this little explanation has helped somewhat.
Says who? Those are simply your definitions. The "Big Boys" also work with plugin instruments(The VST protocol is Steinberg's technology). Sounds like you are just trying to use semantics to defend yet another weakness of Orion. Doesn't it ever grow old?

No, it seems more like you idiots are just trying to find an excuse to have a f**king whinge. If you can't see the basic paradigm difference between Cubase and Reason, that's most definitely your problem, not mine. Whilst everything homogenises over time, as new features are added, the basic philosophy behind different products remains their main point of difference. Newer products like Traktion and Live occupy a middle ground, being neither fish nor fowl, which probably blurs a the boundary a little these days but it shoudl still be obvious to anyone who has used them that ORION has far more in common with Reason than it does with Cubase. Despite its feature-set looking more like the latter on paper, the user experience is very, very different.

Some people still use hardware sequencers, and some soft synths include sequencers. So to define sequencer as narrow category of software ("the big boys") doesn't hold.
I know what a f**king sequencer is, dipshit, I've owned more hardware versions than software in my time. I also have sufficient mental capacity to uinderstand that it is considerably less applicable as an overall descriptor of some software than others. i.e. Remove the sequencer from Cubase and what do you have? A bunch of disconnected windows. Remove the sequencer from ORION and you'd hardly notice, in that its not the focus of the workflow. That's why only a dumbarse would call ORION a sequencer. It has a sequencer, whereas you'd be more correct in saying that Cubase is a sequencer because the rest of it revolves around that. How can this not be perfectly self-evident? How can you have failed to understand my meaning in the context in which is was presented? Seriously, sometimes this place is a complete f**king joke.

And it's sad to see you becomming the butt of those jokes. Really from a personal level is makes me unhappy to watch.

I have never used or tried orion, but i was in some other thread which i cannot find and it mentioned that audio tracks in orion are only fed into RAM.

is this true?

Just want to weed out any potential ideas of trying hosts there is no point in trying ;)

both of your point have already been called into question in this thread ;)
My points are answers. ;-)
Your first "answer" seems to be incorrect unless you can point us to documentation proving othwerwise. I could find none.
My first answer is correct and based on my experience. ORION HAS DISK STREAMING FOR AUDIO TRACKS! My second statement is also correct. I can sequence midi and audio with Orion in an elegant, comfortable and very fast way. I'm not an english-speaking person, so I don't mind how we say; it has a sequencer or it is a sequencer, that's the same for me knowing and using Orion's capabilities.

No you're not making any sense, just playing with semantics to defend your Orion. I do feel pity for you my old friend, always having to resort to name calling and foul language to defend to Orion. Like I said isn't it getting old?

PROOF in DOCUMENTATION ? Audio RECORDING to Disk Streaming? Show me a thread at Synapse or KVR or a statement in the Manual that backs up your claim?

The funny bit is that if there's any sort of "right" and "wrong" with this sequencer / virtual studio definition, Bones is right indeed. This terminology has been used for a long time, and should be clear to anyone who's been around for a while.

Somewhat funnier is the semantics whining coming from those blindly refusing to grasp the point.

Is it bad acid day at KVR again? :D

And Teksonik, since you're likely to respond... don't get into the semantics discussion when your responses revolve around either deliberate misunderstanding of or just wordplay on what someone else said :P

The proof! I can load more wavedata, than my 'puters memory, and at playback my HDD is reading! What the heck is this?

Well, that doesn't exactly make it correct though. Or atleast not accurate.. but fair enough.

If a sequencer is an application that centers around an arrangment window, what do you call what used to called a sequencer,I.E something that does sequencing?

Regardless of whether Orion should be called a sequencer, IMHO there are two places where you might want disk streaming: The sampler and the sequencer (unless the playlist should not be called sequencer either, but). I lost track of the original question, but I almost get the feeling - from Lance' reply - that the sequencer supports disk streaming and the sampler does not??

and by the way, i knew a guy named booji in PA, good guy.

I've really tested this audio track playback thing, but I just recall there's some Windows HDD-RAM thingie, that's cheated me. So I could be incorrect on this disk streaming. I've asked Mark for the official statment on this.
