"but how easy would be to implement 5 tabs to be one click away from the pages."
that used to be the way it was, i'm not sure why he changed it.
you know that feeling you get when you're setting your alarm, and you push the "+" button once too many times? and there's no "-" button, and so you have to push it again and again till it comes back around, but by that time your mind has wandered to thinking about boobies or planes or something, and then you overshoot your mark AGAIN.
that's kinda how working with xhip feels without the page tabs.
i don't ever program XHIP, because you have to flip back and forth between pages to determine what is routing to what, and even with tabs this is a pain in the rear.
if i program xhip at all it's only for pretty simple sounds.
i used to simply hit eXT's random button till i got a cool sound, but lately that just seems to be asking for CPU trouble, with the unison thing.
and have we found our new thread?

I read your FAQ but I'm still wondering:aciddose wrote:as for patches, xhip loads patches and there are quite a few available. you have to wait for alpha versions in order to have backward capability with patches you save. (patches made with a revision may not load correctly in future versions)
If I save an .fxb file now, and I update Xhip later on, will I be unable to load the .fxb? If so, is there a way to avoid this problem?
Great synth, btw!! So far I've only programmed a simple bass sound, but that one already sounds amazing!

by "like" do you mean its looks? because the way it looks is good. i like the way it looks. simple, easy to read contrast, grey but with splashes of color. i like that part.
but have you really tried programming on it? i don't see how anyone could like to program on it, i don't think it's a matter of taste but of bad ergonomics and bad information-representation.

good point bengeorge!!
i also think the look of the current gui is very nice,
i would love that look but all pages fitted on to one
as you say, programming is no fun, & i'm already crap at programming patches!!

"how easy would be to implement 5 tabs to be one click away from the pages."
moderately difficult. not extremely difficult, but difficult enough to make me sweat. not something a typical coder would be capable of. it required some redesign. thanks to the redesign though some kludges have been eliminated so it was worth it. i changed some fairly important sections so there may be a possiblity for crashes. it isnt likely to crash though, i've tested it and it seems fine.

i see items are FINALLY being ticked off the todo list at a reasonable rate!if i use fxb files, will they load in future versions?
no. they will work some time between now and the release of beta 7. the only way to ensure that these files work correctly is to use chunk mode which i have not yet implemented in xhip. due to this, if you save your tracks in your host they possibly will not work with future versions either. for this reason i recommend that you keep the versions of xhip you use in tracks. since i have begun maintaining a versioning system and an archive of releases this is less important.
i'm not sure about fxp files, if i were you i would simply use the patch formats internal to xhip since they are stable and give you better accuracy. in the future additional information will be saved in the patches.
see "some of the parameters are not saved in patches, ..."

Nice one aciddose. and bengeorge, there is a "-" button. Its the R-Click. I actually find that it speeds things up a bit to be able to change pages anywhere on the GUI with a couple of right or left clicks. Once you work with this synth a bit it is very fast to use and can do many complicated sounds. The frequency and res mod in the filter section is awesome. The linear glide mode sounds great too, my favorite glide. I like to put a bit of vibrato on my lead sounds too which sounds awesome with the the delay set a little bit before the lfo kicks in. I think there is also a feature for the .... Ijust got interuppted and I forget what I was talking about....... sorry. Oh yea. I think you can trigger envelopes with the modulators... I cant remember.

When you get used to it, it's basically very easy to program it from scratch. I even tend to like it's tabbed interface, because you can have easy overview of needed controls in no time. And sound is... perfect for my taste
aciddose, thank you for this wonderful synth, and keep up the good work.

First off, Xhip is awesome when I take the time to spend an hour or two tweaking things. I also think it is primarily the GUI that slows me down. I would personally love virtual knobs and tabs, but I understand none of what it takes to do that. Thanks for what you have done already in creating this awesome FREE synth.

hi. i thought someone was already taking on the UI design part for xhip. wasn't .jon doing it?

gsoto and markdeaton have both volunteered individually to do gui designs for xhip. they are busy right now (xmas, etc) and hopefully will be able to start working on their designs in the middle or end of january.
anybody can volunteer. if you'd like to see knobs on the gui, make an example image showing me how you'd like to see them layed out. it takes very little effort at this point to implement changes to the gui layout. my systems are very mature, very capable and easy to work with.
before wasting your time though, just take into consideration the fact xhip has close to 100 parameters for you to arange. a grid of 100 knobs, whether you've seen it before or not, i can assure you will only make your eyes gloss over and your head fill with pudding when you attempt to use it.

aciddose; the only way i've been able to successfully organize things is by democratically polling the public desire. i have only basic sound programming skill, so rely on other peoples advice quite a lot.
but (no offense is intended by saying this), but the amount of controls on xhip aren't anything i'm not used to. recall that i've skinned wusikstation before
it's a monster, ask anyone who has skinned for it. it's an enormous undertaking
anyway, if people have already volunteered, i wont volunteer since it would be rude IMO to butt in.
the synth sounds wonderful though. for the record, i honestly don't have a problem with the current UI.
in fact i kind of like it quite a lot.

well if anybody can handle the number of parameters they should do a layout if they want, it wouldnt be rude at all, it would be greatly apreciated by everyone i think.
basically what i want is a combination of two things which can actually be divided into those two parts if desired. i need widget designs and the bitmaps for different layers (shadow, diffuse, specular and masks) and i need layouts designed for specific types of widgets.
people can even help by making 3d models of knobs or other widgets and we can render them into bitmaps to use or possibly use my 3d renderer to render them in xhip in realtime. the only reason i'm not already working on this stuff is that i'm not very good at it. what you see on the gui is fairly close to the best i can do at the moment, i'm not very skilled in terms of graphical design.
