All of my favorites have now made it into this thread. I was just waiting for Atmosphere to pop up.

Actually, what's overrated about Atmosphere is that UVI interface. It takes way too long to load the plugin and the sounds. They could at least throw in a progress bar! And those classic file menus are carpel-tunnel hell.

Interesting thread indeed!
Since it seems that nearly every major synth out there has shown up on this list, can we conclude the following:
"Every synth feels overrated to someone or to a certain group of users."
Or is there really a synth out there that could be considered "not overrated"?
How about Sculpture from emagic? I would be interested if anyone feels that's overrated. It's one of my favorite synths and probably the best "underrated" synth out there since its only accessible to Logic Pro users.

Why is it every time I criticize a Spectrasonics product, spectrum is actually reading posts at that exact moment?
Hey, while you're here: are there any plans to improve the loading time of Atmosphere? Cubase projects with Atmosphere take forever to load.

The big one that comes to mind for me is Wusikstation. Clunky interface, crappy sound. I wouldn't use this if it was free...i just can't figure out how so many people at KVR love this crap.

Answering my own question:
I'm pretty sure that it's a safe conclusion to say the following statement:
"The worldwide user-base of synthesizers is so diverse, that every synth will seem over-rated or not useful to some people.....no matter how many people find that synth inspiring and useful."
I'd love to see if someone can prove that statement wrong.
Are we surprised that there is no real consensus on what makes a good synth?
I guess its the same truth as "you can't please all of the people, all of the time".

You might have liked version 1 better. That's the one I bought, and I was really impressed with how much diverse sounds you got for such little money. Since then, I find it a little buggy and, yes, the interface is more crowded and difficult to navigate. It's a good staple synth, for pads and basses and atmospherics, I find.OrderInChaos wrote:The big one that comes to mind for me is Wusikstation. Clunky interface, crappy sound. by the way.....I can't be bothered to go through all the pages but did Oddity ever make it on this list?
It's one of my favs and I just wanted to make sure someone hates it.

A sound conclusion, so to speak. Of course, those who love the same synth that others find impenetrable seem almost offended by someone saying they don't get it. An example for me is Surge. I know some believe it to be the finest synth on the planet, but I don't get the interface at all, and the presets seem designed to undermine any assessment of what sounds it might actually be capable of. No big deal, because I have more synths than I know what to do with anyway, but my lack of appreciation is stupefying to fans of the synth.spectrum wrote:"Every synth feels overrated to someone or to a certain group of users."
You never hear this kind of discussion when it comes to traditional musical instruments, do you? "Ah, that Steinway is rubbish. Can't do a thing with it!"
