Same here, although I'm not clear on what I can do with the output automation yet, or what I can actually define as output automation. I'm assuming that will be clearer to me once I play with the official release!
I think you'll have to experiment anyway! But I can already say it will help you create frequency related effects, such as controlling the gain depending on the frequency of the signal (kind of frequency-dependent compression), or adjust a cutoff for an instrument depending on the frequency of another, create a ducking delay for high pitches only etc...
It's also very useful when mixing, to check wether the spectrums of several tracks overlap or not...

It's about the Pro version but might as well be interesting for the free version: you can see the Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst Pro spectrum analyzer plugin in action in gearwire.com's latest video review:
Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst Pro Review & Tutorial
They do not show the most advanced functionalities of the plugin (memories, curves choice, MIDI and automation output), so it's applicable to the freeware version too.

Enjoy!

I'm apologize in advance, I know my questions are going to annoy some people but I really need help!

I'm asking these questions in full sincerity. I'm very new to doing video work, only been at it for 3 weeks.

I'm trying to lessen the distortion in my video from standing to close to a speaker while recording a dj. I'm hoping FreqAnalyst can help me.

1) Does the program do anything to the sound or do I just use it to look at frequencies?

2) What do the knobs do/mean? I'm really lost on this one and I can't seem to google/wikipedia it for answers.

3) What do I do with the information? What do I tweak exactly?

Thanks!

Hell yes! I think Grymm is gettin married so has scant little time for skinning lately. :(

I did some color edits for the Free Freq Analyst plug if anybody is interested. Don't have any place to put them up right now, maybe Blue Cat could add them to his site.

Or not.............

1) yes, the FreqAnalyst plugin only analyzes the signal, it does not perform any modification.

2) Did you check the user manual? It is also available directly from the user interface of the plugin (right click on the background)

3) The information displayed helps you understand the frequency content of your audio signal. It helps you see what your ears cannot hear in the audio spectrum.

For your specific task (reducing distortion) you might want to first have a look at the audio track in an audio editor to actually "see" where distortion and clipping occured. Then maybe you should give a try to our Blue Cat's Dynamics plugin which might help you reduce the perception of distortion, together with some EQ.

If you need help on this particular subject (distorstion reduction and audio healing), I am sure there are many studio experts likely to answer you on this forum, maybe just post a new topic.
