Nice one mate - appears to be some classics here.

loachm, these are fantastic, many thanks...I know on the DOA thread you mention that you can't do requests; but maybe you can tell me what the name of a track is that I've heard a sample from?

If you can help me out there, this is what I'm looking for. Its 'Hold It, Now Hit It' by the Beastie Boys, and its the loop that's running under the scratched whistle, just after the main hook, 'hold it, now.....' and then the 'hit it!' - then the whistle gets scratched as the loop drops.

It sounds like a pretty simple samba-type thing...any ideas? I found a site which lists a load of sampled tracks along with the track which sampled them, so you can cross reference. It listed Kool & The Gang as being sampled on this track, using 'Wild & Peaceful' but I don't thnk that's it... have you got any suggestions?

...actually, I said you can do requests - the only restriction is that I'm not a wizard :)...

...unfortunately I don't have the "Licence To Ill" album, so I could only listen to a snippet at amazon.com - the intro with the brass swell and the whistle indeed is from Kool & The Gang's "Funky Stuff". Wikipedia lists as another sample source for this song "The Return Of Leroy" from The Jimmy Castor Bunch - you can also hear that break in another amazon snippet...

http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Man-Ji ... 730&sr=8-1

...unfortunately, I don't have this record (and won't buy it anytime soon) - however, I have sampled some latin & samba breaks lately and you can expect some of this stuff soon. As I said, I could only listen to the beginning of that Beastie Boys song, but if you're really looking for such a samba loop (you know, with such a tom hit), then I have quite some of these lying around. Maybe I'll upload some disco breaks the next week (had something else in mind, actually)...

that's it, definitely! 'The Return Of Leroy Pt.1' - double definitley! thanks for the link, that was the clincher. Hey, hope you don't mind - but I've got another loop I can't pin down - mind if I run this one past you as well?

About uploading, seriously, I don't want to request something which might impact your production time or anything - I'm well happy just having breaks ID'd. Thanks again.

markoos for future reference..

:help: okay, todays' test relates to a conga break (pretty sure its a pair of congas), which was used on a track by A Man Called Adam on Barefoot In The Head Remix, 1990 http://www.discogs.com/release/54159. It was also used by Todd Terry on Bango from 1988 http://www.discogs.com/release/29978, but I think Barefoot In The Head shows it off a bit better.

The Bango track, although it was used here first, has the break edited & cut up a bit and doesn't play the full loop very often, at least on the album version. The Barefoot... track has it playing in full as a supporting loop through the remix version, so maybe it wasn't programmed for the Todd Terry track - what i mean is, its edited in quite a rudimentary way, using a fairly basic sample triggering ((by todays standards, at least).

so...have you got any idea what i'm on about?! this one's been bugging me since...well...1988

thanks Lagrange - had a look around there but couldn't find anything relating to the sampling artist in question...:(

I should have mentioned that it is mostly hiphop samples on the breaks..

I believe the song your looking for is:

Arthur Russell 'Go Bang'
from the album 'World Of Arthur Russell'

Its a crazy disco jazzy piece.. Pretty rare. Scores a 8 out 10 for obscurity. Was a mainstay in the 80's in the Chicago warehouse scene. Its along the same vein as LIQUID LIQUID 'Optimo'. Mixes well with Roy Ayers hey uh - what you say come on.

Lots strange vocal sillyness. You have to listen pretty far into the song to hear the parts your talking about. Make sure you listen to the whole thing!

Johnny Hammond Fantasy  marvelous, I used to have that on an lp, part of my collection of rare grooves that were destroyed - an incident I won't go into further detail on, as it still hurts almost 20 years later :(

I dont think its that song! I'm listening to it now and other than the short break at the start there are no other parts as requested.. Although I also love this track..

Fantasy by Johnny Hammond is a well know track and closer to something like Bobby Humphrey's Just a Love Child, Blacks and Blues or Harlem River Drive.

I think diverdee is talking about loachm's post on DOA.

...Johnny Hammond, Bobby Humphrey, Donald Byrd etc. - the Mizell brothers were really great producers - love their lush sound ...

...sorry, haven't had the chance to listen to the man Called Adam and Todd Terry track yet - am I too stupid, but I can't find a proper link where I can listen to the tracks. Or have I missed something on the sites markoos was referring to ...
