Hi all,

I need a weighted keyboard that is less than 88 keys, but more than 48. 61 or 70 or so is good. (I'm fitting it in a tight space. Wish I had room for 88 keys, but I don't.

I need a midi out, but usb is fine.

Used will work.

Need it to be quasi-realistic, but doesn't have to have the perfect feel. Anything's better than the synth thingee I got.

Ideas?

Do you want it to have some knobs and stuff? Or you don't mind if it's just a few or none? Also, pitch wheel and modulation wheel, or just pitch wheel?

Are there even non 88 keys wheighted keyboards ? I don't recall ever seeing one. Surely there must be some but they're pretty rare.

Hmm good point

.. Yamaha has 77 keys weighted keyboards, but it's unlikely that there are keyboards with 70 keys or less weighted keys.

If you're thinking about the Yamaha KX 76 i believe it has normal plastic synth keys. Or are you thinking about another keyboard ?

Ack, yep I was wrong, they only have 88 key models with weighted keys. Pretty frustrating, it seems that Korg and Alesis have 61 key synths, or "workstations" with weighted keys, but no plain keyboards. And there are 77 and probably 61 key keyboards with semi-weighted keys, but not fully weighted keys.

Which ones are you thinking of then ? I don't recall any Korg or Alesis workstations with weighted keys. The bigger ones with 88 keys sure,but not 61 keys ?

I'm almost positive i have seen a weighted 76 key board but cannot for the life of me recall which brand.

CME ? Fatar ? Doepfer ?

Korg Triton 61/77/88 key versions with fully weighted keys.. actually I'm not sure Alesis has fully weighted keys..

But it is only the 88 key version who has a fully weighted wooden piano action keys,right ? I believe the Alesis Fusion 88 has that too.

The Prophet T8 and Synclavier (same keyboard) has 73 or 76 fully weighted wooden piano action keys. Good luck finding one of those in good condition and for a decent price.

EDIT: One could argue the meaning of weighted keys. To me it means wooden piano action one. That's why i wrote it so many times.

Hmmm...I guess I'm searching for a unicorn.

I don't need knobs and such nor pitch or modulation wheels. Got that on my current midi keyboard. I need a keyboard that feels somewhat like a piano.

In the most recent Sweetwater catalog that just came, there's a new Yamaha keyboard (p. 350) called the S08 that has a 61-Key version, S03, but it looks like the 61-key version might be synth-keys only, not weighted.

Hmmm....maybe I just need to give up on size, just go ahead and get a full 88 keyboard.

This won't help you, but it's not a unicorn. I've got a 76 key Ensoniq KS-32 weighted MIDI studio. It's even got aftertouch which seems to be a bit hard to come by these days. It's been the heart of my studio since I bought it new in the early 90's. I've often thought that getting a new 88 keyboard would be nice, but honestly, I've never had a reason to.

Incidentally, the KS-32 keyboard was done by FATAR I believe. So maybe you could check their product line.

I think that actually the Fatar VMK-176 (http://www.studiologic.net/VMK-176plus.html) will be just the ticket. 76 keys should be plenty, and though it will be a little bit big for my workspace, it's worth making that compromise in terms of workspace footprint.

Any other comparable 76-key weighted keyboards out there?

The CME ZSC series comes in 64-, 76- and 88-key versions, all weighted. Not sure about availability, though as it's a brand new product.
