That's why it's called a "Preview" folks.... :-)

There are a lot more video episodes to come of course, and those will feature some of the GUI, synthesis, browser and special Omnisphere features...because there's a lot to this synth. It made the most sense to focus early on with how some of the unique raw material in the core library was created....because we'll be referencing that material in future episodes.

There are several new things that are appearing in Episode 3 for the first time, that weren't shown at NAMM...like the actual sound of the Cathedral Steel Drums, the Typosonic session, the Luminosonic video demo, the sound of the Tesla Coil stuff and a better idea of the Omnisphere sound quality.

The few soundsources shown in this video represent less than 1% of what we have in the Omnisphere core library. We're intentionally not showing many of the other sounds until the instrument comes out in September and you won't ever see us showing exactly how we do all our sound development tricks.....competitors are watching you know.... ;-)

By the way, all the sounds you are hearing in the video (including the background music) were produced using Omnisphere...so there are actually quite a number of new sounds to check out in the context of the video.

....see if you can pick out where the Granular Synthesis is being used... :-)

I'm completely sold on Omnisphere and would love to get it into my hands right now.
One BIG question I have is - will it be possible to put my own samples and sounds through the 'steam' engine? I know there are 50GB of patches and presets and more than enough sounds but the experimenter in me wants to know how some of the sounds I've recorded will sound through the 'Steam' engine.
I mean for sound design this could be absolutely the ultimate tool. Sorry in advance if this topic/question has been covered before.

You can find the answer in FAQ section of the Omnisphere Teaser site:

first off i am sure omnisphere will be pretty good but i just must be some sort of dour presbyterian or summat cos i get offended that the answer to the question mentioned above which was "will i be able to import my samples into omnishpere ?" is

The concept of omnisphere is completly different blah blah blah. Deep synth blah blah blah lifetime to explore blah blah coo to do, which to cut a long story short means no

I guess I beleieve that if something is good you don't need to sell it too hard
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

The answer is not "no".....it's "not initially".

We do have a lot of people asking about it that are confused about it being a sampler, so it's important to point out the conceptual design difference between Omnisphere and something like Kontakt for example.

Omnisphere is a powerful synth that has many possibilities with it's large core library, but it won't ever be a replacement for a good sampler. User sample importing for synthesis would certainly be very cool, so we're not ruling out that possibility for the future.

Pardon our excitement....guilty as charged. It's just our personality....when we make something cool, we've always tended to want to make noise about it...especially when it's something really big we've been working on secretly for several years. Sometimes our enthusiasm offends certain folks who prefer a purely "dry info" approach, but that's really never been our style.

However, I think our track record is pretty good on delivering on the actual goods.... :-)

Sure. We've delivered and are in the process of delivering on those promises too. We're not leaving anyone behind.

• Stylus RMX
- superceded original Stylus Classic/licensed engine
- uses native in-house Spectrasonics engine
- upgrade for Stylus Classic users
- Native UB support

• Omnisphere
- supercedes original Atmosphere/licensed engine
- uses native in-house Spectrasonics engine
- upgrade for Atmosphere users
- Native UB support

• We've also promised a STEAM based solution to Trilogy as well that will be native UB, with an upgrade for existing users too.

We realize the current wait is frustrating for Intel Mac users, which is why we released the interim free solution of the Intel wrappers for Atmosphere and Trilogy last fall, but the transition to using all native in-house code is a very important one. It will allow us to make these kinds of technology transitions much easier and faster in the future for the entire product line.

As far as track record, Stylus RMX is the best example of the support we are capable of with an instrument that's already transitioned to native in-house code. It was actually the first native UB available on the market, because it was completely under our own control.

Lurking for a while - a few points about Omnisphere:

1. It's clear that some folks want some hard facts on this synth and are getting a bit tired of the marketing gibberish and lack of specifics. A block diagram would be a great idea. Any particular reason why this sort of info can't be made available?

2. How should one rate "not initially" and "not ruling out the possibility"? Is a sample import capability part of the roadmap, or isn't it? Enquiring minds need to know.

3. I don't think your enthusiasm is offending anyone. In the spirit of fostering more enthusiasm, please share a few more specifics regarding your new creation. If you're going to make this much noise, make the content more meaningful than just noise.

4. As for the UB debate, you seem to have addressed that issue in the short term with a more firm commitment in the not too distant future. Albeit with a further cash outlay. I'm confident the additional expense will be well worth it.

Great sounds aside, give me a half decent synth or sample set, a basic layering capability and a few choice processors and I'll play you something truly inspiring. Light bulb filaments and burning pianos are great (apparently), but some of us want a better indication of what this new synth is all about and how it will fit into our workflow - both now and further down the roadmap.

In short, the marketspeak is getting a bit tiring for some of us. Please share some "dry info" with your prospective buyers.

Seems all very interesting to me at any rate

I'm enjoying the installments. Can't give too much away, there is after all 7 months to go!

I'm with you. It doesn't bother me.

I'm enjoying them a lot, but I'm also looking forward to the more in depth videos. Not that it madders anyway. I'm getting it ASAP, and I CAN WAIT until september.

I'm getting Omnisphere too. Just that I'm very interested in the steam engine. It seems to me that a big sound design community could be built up around Omni if people have access to the steam engine. We want to do crazy things and get crazy samples and then bring out the missing frequencies with the steam engine. I know it must have taken years to get to this stage and so massive respect to the Spectrasonic guys. When we get our hands on the 50gb then we will see. But one thing that makes Stylus great for me is that RMX files can be imported and mangled with the sage technology.

I just saw the video about psychoacoustic sampling
Really a stunning instrument. Shit, it's not september.

that song made entirely out of light bulbs sounds good.

Also, that tesla coil sample IS the most kickass saw wave ever.
