Maybe there's no misunderstanding, but notice that there's a difference between 9 and #9, the latter being a half step higher.tattiemannie wrote:YEAH! I agree ...fkn 9ths!!!! ... Its not the chord I have a prob with, its just eso many bloody tracks which claim to be 'chill', 'new age', 'ambient', 'relaxation' etc seem to kick off with a soft pad, playing a 9th .... and almost invariably move onto a chord 2 and a half tones higher, leaving the '9th' note hanging in there .... so becoming a 6th.

Inversions of flattened 9ths sound really demented at times.. Remind me of suspenseful moments in those old silent films
.
for example
F Gb A C Eb +inversion > A C Eb F Gb -inversion > F A C Eb Gb
Gb G Bb Db E +inversion > Bb Db E Gb G -inversion > Gb Bb Db E G
G B D F Ab +inversion > B D F G Ab -inversion > G Ab B D F
and so on...
for example
F Gb A C Eb +inversion > A C Eb F Gb -inversion > F A C Eb Gb
Gb G Bb Db E +inversion > Bb Db E Gb G -inversion > Gb Bb Db E G
G B D F Ab +inversion > B D F G Ab -inversion > G Ab B D F
and so on...

I have always thought F minor is far more melancholy than D minor.cyanogen wrote:"It's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy I'm working on in D minor which is the saddest of all keys, I find. People weep instantly when they hear it, and I don't know why."
I have seen people mention the d minor thing before on this forum, where does this claim come from. Have studies been done on the nature of the effects of chords.

Common knowledge to usually not use those inversions as they contain b9 or b2 intervals,Optomadic wrote:Inversions of flattened 9ths sound really demented at times.. Remind me of suspenseful moments in those old silent films.

The one chord that I can't use is very simple; pick a bass note and play the flat 3rd and a flat ninth. The overtones actually begin to buzz in a very nasty way!

I was looking thru my chord book the other day and came across a chord I just wont use. The Maj7.
I never use it, and I really dislike the sound of it and always have ever since I first heard it.

It's about a piece that's sort of a cross between Mozart and Bach, a Mach piece really. Just simple lines intertwining. Lick my love pump?xtp wrote:I have always thought F minor is far more melancholy than D minor.cyanogen wrote:"It's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy I'm working on in D minor which is the saddest of all keys, I find. I dont understand about the d minor thing, but to my ears chords and keys and intervals sound quite different from each other.JerGoertz wrote:Why is D minor said to be the saddest of all scales?
Shouldn't the root note be completely irrelevant, and only the intervals matter?
I seldom use d minor so i have no personal impression of that key.
