I'm sure you're all wondering what's new, so here we go:

I've implemented the quick bank access system described in a previous post: Rhino features, in addition to its writable, 64 presets internal bank, a inlimited number of read-only bank slots. Just drop a fxb file into Rhino presets folder and these new banks will be available through a menu on the main page.

A preliminary version of a DX7 sysex importer is included. Use at your own risk ! It's already able to come up with very usable sounds, although it is recommended to spend some time to finetune them manually. My goal is not to make a perfect DX7 emulator, as there are very good ones out there.

User sliders can now work in any direction, and have up to 16 different parameters assigned to a single slider. So you can make some really crazy effects with only one slider move... Expect more banks using this feature soon....

The additive generator now features a right-click menu with various spectral shaping functions (remove odds, remove evens, .....)

And last but not least, a very nasty bug has been fixed: tempo-sync'ed envelopes would not follow tempo changes properly. So now you can hear these Elektroloops in all their glory !

Enjoy, and spread the word :-)

Thanks, Big Tick! :D

I can't help but compare your swift pace of development with certain other vsti developers who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty!

Well done, and much appreciated.

Thanks Tick. Now I guess I need to go edit my review. 8)

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Thanks for adding this handy feature, Tick!

(One more reason I'm glad I bought Rhino).

Interestingly, my reaction upon importing a DX7 preset was not, "Oh, that doesn't sound 100% like a DX7."

It was more like, "Oh, but that just sounds like a DX7. Rhino can easily take that basic DX7 sound a lot further and do a lot more with it.

I find that's true of Rhino in general. You can go a lot further with it.

Imports without problems. IF someone wants
a good site to get SYX files:

Yamaha DX7 Resource Centre

http://www.thedx7.co.uk/

They have 8 Original Rom Cartridge sounds, other banks and related software and links to other DX7 sites.

Hi all

Also my own DX7 page
http://tamw.atari-users/net/dx7.htm

The importer works pretty good.Tic and I have been tweaking it. The only thing you have to watch are the long Envelopes decay rates coming from the DX sysex files, as Rhino freaks out if you do more then one note at a time. As Tic said, you have to adjust and tweak the sound to taste. I might make a bank of my own DX7 sounds rhino-ized! 8) :) ( wish there was a rhino emotioncon)

Thanks for a great update Tic!!

Tim,

This shouldn't be a problem now: in the official 1.09 I've limited the maximum envelope time, as you suggested.

All: the DX7 importer uses default effects stored in the "Effect Settings" folder. You can overwrite these defaults if you don't like them.

I'm at work, so I haven't tried it out..
But I LOVE the idea of having access to several banks with a drop down.

Hey Tick

Thank you very much for the new update - great. :)

However - I have one little problem.
Rhino will not open the "Ambient Pad" Bank.

I get an Rhino Error message - same problem using the new preveiw feature or Load Bank.

All other Banks are OK.

Anybody else having this problem?

Best regards
Bo

Post

thanks Tick and Tim for testing
i look forward to getting home and trying things out.

as someone who has spent some time exploring the web for old DX7 sysex files, Tim's site is undoubtedly the best site to concentrate on.

the uk site mentioned has a mind-boggling number of banks -- thankfully organized by instruments, but it's a lot of mind-numbing wading through way too many variations on instrument emulations.

'real' instrument was a very big deal back then, but it's very hard to remember why.

Tim's site, otoh, has your basic space exploration and more modern sounding pads, etc. and some great bells. much less tedious and a lot more fun to poke around in.

also I'd recommend
http://www.freewebs.com/teksonik/synthpatches.htm

this is Teksonik's site and he has a bank of his old dx7 patches and his sound design is also first-rate.

Bo,

Can you check that the fxb file for the Ambient bank is not read-only ?

What is the exact error message, anyway ?
