What about Audiomulch and its metasurface?
You can set up x number of 'states' for any number of vst/mulch contraption params, and morph between them on a 2D area with mouse (midi control forthcoming).

and I'm the type who's twiddling, reading, learning, programming for dozens of hours a week
I'll have to check it out again.
I wonder if the guy who made the Plex, who used to make design kit at Lexicon, is the one who
designed the Vortex?

This deserves a bump since it's been 2 years since the original post and hopefully the VST world has coughed up someone who knows how to emulate this.

i dont think chaining a few choice plugins will do it.
I reckon someone who knows something about the algo's in the Vortex is gonna have to code up an emulation from scratch ...... or SE or whatever.

sounds like a job for A- an external controller, sending cc's to a predetermined location within the unit.... B - lots of fx inside... i'm experimenting with the xoxos modules... and some oscillators from evm.. maybe after i sleep i can help???

I have actually been working on and off on an emulation in SM. I have a fairly complex working skeleton of the various delay paths and a pretty accurate emulation of the Detune effect (env controlled inverse pitch shifter). I dont have the inner workings of 'the morphing engine' figured out quite yet.
One issue I have is with some of the delay paths, it is possible to create an unstable feedback loop (you can do this on the actual vortex of course but it wont crash on you like a computer will). Anyway, its definitely very slow going & its probably been at least a month since I touched it, but I will finish (someday hopefully).

I was a huge fan of the Vortex, but finally sold it because I was frustrated that all it's very cool rhythmic effects did not sync to a MIDI clock. Dumb move on my part. The unit was a bit noisy but it was well worth it. I'll check out this Reaktor ens for sure but I'd love to see PSP emulate this baby.

One secret to "preset morphing" is what type of interpolation is being done on realtime parameter changes. They have different "flavors" of resulting morphy sounds depending upon the algorithm used... which, though I as an end-user am aware of and use to my advantage all the time, I have no insight into mathematically.

I have both units as well; one stacked on top of the other in a rack. When you try to emulate the Vortex with the MPX 1, you may have to add another outboard device to fill out the occasional missing effect block. But with a little creative programming, you can nail nearly all of what the Vortex does within the MPX 1.I would NEVER part with my vortex and also have an MPX-1 which has some of the Vortex algorithms with the benefit of Reverb and MIDI
control!!!, But it lacks the immediacy of the Vortex which I think is its major strength
The best feature of the MPX 1 is the external MIDI control; I'd have to agree with that. It goes way beyond the standard CC messages. But what many don't realize is how powerful that unit is as a MIDI transmission device. This is 12+ year old technology, and I'd be hard-pressed to name an equivalent.
All of the on-board LFOs, envelope followers, EGs, arpeggiator, glide parameters, etc. can be patched to transmit MIDI messages through the MIDI Out port. Point these at any hardware / software synth or effect, or record it as editable automation within a host application. And the interconnectivity provided by parameters like OnLvl, OnSrc, ClkSrc, parallel Rates, etc. takes all this to yet another level of unrivaled control.

If your the experimental type you can setup any number of vst and run different sorts of morphing in the xlotop - "chainer" host.
Taken from chainer's help;
Randomize/Morph
The Randomize/Morph dialog can be ued to create new plugin presets.
You have the option to randomize all plugin parameters, the parameters that are automated or the parameters that are not automated. If the "Range" check box is checked the parameters will get a random value in a defined range (1-100%) around the old value. If this check box is not checked the parameters get a random value independent from the old value. To apply the randomize function press the "Randomize" button.
To use the morph function do the following: click on the buttons that are initially labled "None" and select two different presets from the popup menus. Alternativly you can assign two random presets by pressing the "Randomize Presets" button. Once that two presets are selected you can use the slider two morph between them.

I hear what your saying & i think is going to be a real booger to nail exactly whats going on inside the vortex in terms of parameter interpolation and cross type fading...hours of testing that I will hopefully get around to before the end of summer.runagate wrote: Wonderful.

Now that I think of it I wish I had proper access to this in SE since, being an inverterate automater of tons of parameters, the flavor of the interpolation algorithms is a huge part of why I end up using any a specific delay on a given song. And not always easy to remember months down the line which VST gave me that special sound I once found

I LOVE my MPX-1, but it's no Vortex. It does, however, sound better and it a lot more flexible in a sense. Different animal though.

Yeah! Thanks Jack, for taking my $50 for his effect bundle and then releasing them for free a few weeks later. Prince of a guy. At least now I have a nice folder of super crappy sounding VSTs. Download them if you want, but if this guy ever asks a dime for anything I suggest no one buy a thing from him.
