'Matra' means 'time unit', what we in the west call 'beat'.

6 3/4 quarter notes would be kinda sorta like 27/16. (three, cubed)
They are often doing it simultaneously (up to three ways) at different durational levels; divided by three, by two, or at half time, etc. AND EVERYBODY KNOWS WHERE ONE IS.
