Mmkay people, I've decided to do a quick side project.

I think I can fit a "Moonfish Anniversary Edition" into my schedule. Sounds like a fun thing to do.

Input and feedback are welcome. Here are my plans so far:

- 4 tracks (original MoFi had 3, the 4th is an anniversary present  )
- 800x480 resolution, so you can run it on tiny EEE PCs and other bottom-end Netbooks
- optimized for ultra low-specced PCs
- some of the original MoFi flavor from 10 years ago (lofi effects, etc.)
- fun and quirky! not to be taken too seriously :P
- sounds like a virus, or not. we'll see

:D

Hurray!
How about stereo samples support (the way it was done in Tuareg, ie import left or right channel or mix both to mono)?

I've played a bit around with MoonFish. Man, it's lovely and would be perfect! But alas my little P75 can't cope :( It does play, but not very smooth. It stutters a bit too much to be useful.

Bram, is there something I can do to lighten it up a little bit? Increase the playback buffer size, change sample rate conversion technique or something? This machine of mine has issues with screen updates (slow memory) but I don't think that's really the problem here.

I've not even used the distortion, delay & vinyl effects. Do they still use up cycles when set to zero? Is there a way to disable them completely?

Tried BeroTracker and it won't run: CPU is too old.

Tried SchismTracker: the help page says an added sample automatically becomes an instrument. Well, not in the version I tried! So no sound and no clue how to make an instrument.

Still have to try out HammerHead & CHibiTracker...

Not yet, noted... Judging on the screenshots it might be too heavy, but you never know.

What trackers usually miss is on-the-fly selection of patterns and adjusting the tempo. Not possible with finished mod files, but MoonFish does this really well.

Hi, I'll have a look. I haven't used it in ages.. but if I remember correctly I wrote it on a Pentium 90 - so it shouldn't be totally unusable on a P75.

Hey Brambos, really excited to hear that you intend doing a Moonfish update!

Only tried it out today, and its great! you might want to look at the thread I started 'free standalone drum machine' in 'instruments'. The criteria I am considering are a little different from what OP here wants, ... I'll not hijack this thread, but it would be nice if your update could satisfy our collective needs :)

So yesterday I've played a bit around with HammerHead. Runs stable enough, but can't compose songs alas.

Also reviewed some mod-alike trackers. Most do work, but the GUI is not for me.

So I stumbled upon LeafDrums. I read it doesn't run on Vista, but on my system it's good. Does everything I need. DrHumba works nice also, but LeafDrums offers far more features like accented beats. A bit weird GUI, but it works OK.

Thanks all, I'm sorted now :)

NB Bram: good luck with the 10th anniversary of MoonFish! If you can get it's performance down to a simular level as HammerHead (you wrote that in 1997, right?) then it should also work for me. But no hurry...

Bert Koor, yeah leafdrums should work good for you .... only drawback other than the fx being limited (no reverb) is that it seems hell bent on sequencing only patterns which are 4 beats long. you can make shorter patterns, but i dont see how it is possible to string these together and not leave gaps1 If you can live with that though, then it's perfect!

Well, you can change the time signature on any measure by clicking on the Tempo line on that measure. Only in quarters, so 7/8 is not possible but I don't need that :)
