I've heard that "I Like Big Butts", "Make My Coochie Twitch, and "Up In Ya" are all actually based on the finer points of Chess...

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Bobby Fischer's novelty hip-hop hit
'Lick My Sokolsky Opening'.

Gary Kasparov also enjoyed a few weeks on the charts with his romantic 'Albin Countergambit by Moonlight' which was blatantly ripped off by The Captain and Tenille to become 'Muskrat Love'.

RE: Kriminal's post

just learned today that Mark Taimanov was a musician as well as chess player (and learned some other things in the other direction from your post)

this morning on the bus I read that Taimanov said that when he was playing music, he was taking a break from chess, and when he was playing chess, he was taking a break from music, so his life was a constant holiday (New In Chess 2008 issue 7)

many of those mentioned above are very well-known in chess history: Philidor, Morphy, Zukertort, Tarrasch, Znosko-Borovsky, Taimanov, Smyslov (sorry if I left out any)

now I'm thinking it's strange that Capablanca wasn't the Cuban Cole Porter ;)

perceiving neither black nor white but shades of grey

I always thought it was about sucking one's thumb or maybe the difference between color and grayscale, but now that I'm reading the lyrics for the first time, I'm thinking one shouldn't invest in satin sheets until after one has someone else to "enjoy" them with, although I'm sure cotton sheets with a high thread count and maybe a mattress pad would be better.

I always thought of the words as not dissimilar to some Yes lyrics -- not meaning much of anything but rather used for effect...voice as instrument.

That would work given it makes about the same sense.

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters Ive written
Never meaning to send
Beauty Ive always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you

Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what Im going through
They cant understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end

And I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters Ive written
Never meaning to send
Beauty Ive always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
I love you
I love you

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy is spent

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young

Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colours from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
Everyone knows, this song is s*ite

And which is an illusion

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

no that's blinded by the light "wrapped up like douche"
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

So, unrequited love? Not precisely a chess metaphor given the spelling.

I'm off then.
