Did you ever check out Cubendo's right-click menus? I was so used to that when I came to Reaper that I didn't complain about THAT!

I do own Reaper, but I admit I've never gotten into it, as it never seems to transfer midi to vsti's in a predictable way. In other words, I'll create a project, write a part in the midi editor and start playing with it, and within ten to fifteen minutes it seems to no longer be playing the same notes it did when I started.

It's always been easier to return to Cubase and FLStudio than to figure out why it's screwing up so. Am I the only person this happens to? Writing parts in a piano roll is a pretty basic part of my workflow, so when it doesn't work, the DAW doesn't really work for me.

(If this is a known issue with a known fix or workaround, please let me know, and I'll give it a shot!)

In fairness to the reich (if such a thing is possible) ... you won't find many menus if any at all, nested 2-3 levels deep in Cubase's right click menus. The thing that bugged some people about Reaper's menus (before the menu editor) was the nesting.

Assign a midi channel from the TCP and you'll see what I mean. 3 levels of menus where with most daws it - something so common - is right out front on the GUI.

Now it has a menu editor so it's all good. Make your own.

I'm a Cubase user and I find Reaper's right click menus to be far more bloated than Cubase's, by a fair margin. More importantly, in Cubase you almost never need to use them, in Reaper they're often the only way to do a certain thing (sans key commands)...

There's two play button and a record button, but they're under a layer of bloat.

The point is that with many apps, you don't even need the context menus as much.

It's all about how you prefer to work. Some people like tools with buttons, some people like hotkeys, some people like menus. There is no right and wrong workflow. Which is another reason I stand by the statement that nobody can give a definitive meaning of "bloat". I have said it for a while now, but bloat to one person is a feature to another.

I'm seldom working with menus. I use a lot of key commands. Maybe that's the reason why I'm not so bothered with any menu structures. Back in Nuendo/SX I wasn't hot on customizing the menus. AFAIR nearly the only thing I customized away was that notation menu.

Is there a way to simulate loop recording in Reaper as it is in Live and Sony Acid? Also, I find working with Rex files cumbersome...

I have this same problem.. kind of. Playing my midi keyboard yields very bad results in Reaper. The timing is completely off and everything seems "random".

I have no such problems in FL Studio nor EnergyXT using the same computer and midi keyboard. I really loathe the workflow within the midi editor as well. It just isn't "fluid" to work with. For instance, to fine tune a note there is this really annoying split second it is "stuck" before you can move it. Perhaps this can be tweaked in the preferences? I don't know.. it's way too scary to and time consuming to go through all those preference options.

For straight up mixing though I like Reaper a lot. It's flexibility is second to none and the way it can maximize a Quad core CPU is just brilliant meaning I can fully utilize plugins like Nebula.

it's not a known issue, but neither a 'bug' I think - I assume you must really be doing something fundamentally wrong, but can't begin to imagine what on earth it could possibly be (my imagination is most probably by far not vidid enough - something I'm regularly glad about) - MIDI works flawlessly over here and I never saw anyone report a halfway similar problem...
