Going steady with my track too, and Zyn hasn't crashed or acted up since I started really. Only bug is having to click twice on any control with Zyn open as I can't run it via separate host anymore due to clicks, dunno if that's because too many tracks and Reaper not delegating resources properly that way.

Hi and welcome to the challenge! Late to deadline, but hopefully you can make it with an entry..

Hmm. Still unhappy about what soundcloud does to music
I'd forgotten just how bad 128 bit fixed rate was! if anyone is interested a clean variable bit rate version is here:
http://www.musically.me.uk/music/Into_T ... m_Koth.mp3
This was taken from exactly the same wav file. No more gargling horn or mushy choirs.

It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

Thanks. I'm not using the latest Zyn as advised at the start of this comp as too wary that something might go wrong if i start playing with my setup now. I've dusted off my old linux Ubuntu Studio machine to get working on this and its not online. I'll just be using Zyn connected to Jack CTRL and sequenced using Rosegarden. Will then use Ardour to tweak things like fades in/outs. I don't know about a lot of the software discussed on here, eg. Reaper (?)V'ger wrote:Hi and welcome to the challenge! Well, I'm bloody kicking myself here! Having still not managed to get my head around making this synth work, I have had a wee listen to some of the tracks.
Some wonderful sounds and application .... right now, I have a tiny window of time to try and sort out Zyn, but it aint gonna be enough .. and then I have to zip off and do other stuff, including a couple of gigs over the next 3 days.
I feel like OSC has grown up and left me behind
... well done to all who have got their tracks in so far ... Great work, and Zyn seems to be just about limitless!! ... I may be pissed off at missing out on this comp, but I am inspired to get this beast working when I get the chance if your compositions are anything to go by ... sounds like an awesome synth!!
However, looking forward to enjoying the collection, casting votes, and joining you all again when we get to grips with free Alpha

All those textures! paper, air, glass, water, wood, ceramic, metal, cloth, stone ... and all those spaces ... tunnels, pipes, rooms, caves, throats, cupboards, beaches, forests ...... You may have gathered by now, i am very, very impressed!!!

.... I would have expected 'Mac of B' to create something by now, this synth is made for him. I also look forward to what Yeager does with this beast, kinda hope totolitoto has a go, very intrigued re. what the blitzmeister will make of it, wondering if dwsel has something up her sleeve, and eager to see if a whole load more experienced OSCers will come up with something over the next 3 days .... but it's equally cool to see more new folks having a go

mannie, i'm kind of dead in the water with this thing. i haven't graduated beyond the stock, rhodes-sort-of sound. i found the 'interface' lurking behind my host (renoise), but i'll be darned if i can get the controls to do anything. i tried loading an 'automation device' in renoise, then connecting it to the synth, but there are no parameters to be automated there.
if nothing else, i'll definitely look forward to listening/voting, but this sort of seems like an osc which is weighted toward linux users.
by the comments on this thread, the synth definitely reads to be a great-sounding thing. maybe someday either a) i'll take up linux, or b) it will be in a 'more accessible' vsti format.
who knows? maybe i can 'figure it out a bit' (assuming that's possible with my setup) a bit in the next 2 or 3 days.
whatever else happens, the listening is something i'll look forward to!

Zyn is great fun, to hook up to jack and just play live, but things always seem to slow right down when you actually need to stick a final track together linux and sequence several different parts. e.g. when i render my sections and line them up in rosegarden, the audio tracks go out of sync with the midi tracks! Any suggestions?

Hello laklop, try Yoshimi. It's got better JACK support that enables you to use it at lower latencies. Also it has JACK MIDI support, JACK MIDI doesn't suffer from the jitter ALSA MIDI suffers from so your audio and MIDI tracks should stay in sync. You can get Yoshimi here: http://yoshimi.sourceforge.net/laklop wrote:Zyn is great fun, to hook up to jack and just play live, but things always seem to slow right down when you actually need to stick a final track together linux and sequence several different parts. e.g. when i render my sections and line them up in rosegarden, the audio tracks go out of sync with the midi tracks! Latest stable version is 0.058.1.

Kinda surprised ppl can't even get Zyn running on PC as it works fine in all my hosts Reaper, Cantabile lite, Live Professor, Minihost and Savihost. (XP 32)
I suspect some of the issues might be solved by proper buffer settings in Zyn options, but there could of course be other issues as well.
MrBlitz: No VST automation, but midi learn works very well.

Thanks Jeremy. Never used Yoshimi before. I'll have to look at how to install it onto Ubuntu Studio. Apt-get?AutoStatic wrote:Hello laklop, try Yoshimi. laklop, which release of Ubuntu? I have packages available in my PPA for Lucid: https://launchpad.net/~autostatic/+archive/ppa
If you're using Maverick it is just a simple apt-get yoshimi which will install Yoshimi 0.058.1. 0.058.1 has one little bug though, it doesn't properly reinstate state files that contain patches that use the PADsynth engine. But I also have patched packages if necessary that I can upload somewhere.
Best,
Jeremy

When you click to download the file from the SoundCloud player that we use on the site, you will get the original uploaded file, untouched.folderol wrote:Hmm. I'm not sure, but I imagine most people will download and listen to them when voting? I certainly do.
But I find for my style of music at least that when I render from Reaper directly to 128kbs mp3 at max quality settings there are not too many artifacts, and believe SoundCloud will not re-encode if already at that bitrate. I think the worst is when something goes from compressed mp3 to mp3 again like happens if you upload at other rates.

Hi Jeremy. Thanks for the tip. I might have to delay giving this a try til after the challenge deadline as struggling for time and still not overly confident when it comes to the more technical side of dealing with the software. On another aside, I've found that when I link Hydrogen and Zyn through JACK, sequenced through Rosegarden, they never stay in sync - (but that's probably a discussion for somewhere else on the forum!)AutoStatic wrote:laklop, which release of Ubuntu? laklop, try setting Hydrogen as the JACK master when you want to use its sequencer functionalities. Can't guarantee that it will work though, Hydrogen as a sequencer is not really reliable unfortunately.
