FYI : Ardour 3 is alpha 4 and distributed without compilation needed, suitable for every distro.

In my view, if you want to use Linux, you have to stay away from wine as much as you can ; some windows apps may be useful, but you have to use the native ones. Also, don't try to use too much vst's with wrappers, you'll be deceived.

The first thing is to understand the jack audio system, then you can do a lot of things.

Basically you have :
- jack audio
- Ardour 3, Qtractor, Rosegarden, Musescore, Non-sequencer, Non-daw, Non-mixer
- Qsampler for sound libraries (handles GIG, SFZ, SF2)
- Some good synths : the Loomer line, Hexter, WhySynth, Phasex, Foo YC 20, Calf Organ, Minicomputer, Nekobee and many more
- Very good effects

And a few oddities that you can't have with windows (Din for instance)

It's 5% of what you have with windows, but it's enough for me.

That's the thing! Why emulate some software which was designed for another OS, then emulate ASIO to get low latency and have loads of things not working when you can have most of the things it can do as native software already? Of course it will never be an equivalent for the thing you wanted to run through wine but if you can live with that there's loads of stuff you can do already.

Stanlea, you failed to mention Rakarrack, Guitarix, zynaddsubfx, Yoshimi, and Hydrogen,
some of the best linux audio apps ever made, so you must be punished by being flogged with a wet Ubuntu manual, and typing Torvalds 1000 times on a manual typewriter

From what I read, unverified personally, FLS8 and 9, and Ableton Live 8 are working
now, if a well configured wine/jackd environment is set up. Wine has made 3 consecutive
major releases that were not just regressions with a higher number, so things are looking up
for those with a favorite group of windows instruments.

But as always, a fully supported soundcard and videocard are keystones, and motherboard
chipsets should be googled against what one hopes to utilize in a linux setup.

An example of linux freedom in programming, is Plug, a clone of Fender Fuse,
an app used for amp/fx preset design, on Mustang 1 and II amps, the windows version requiring both Silverlight, and .net framework, the linux version utilized some existing alternatives, a few meg versus a few hundred meg, to perform most of the core functions!

I see quite a few windows users who are interested in linux, until realizing it may cost
a few dozen hours to learn linux basics, and they may need to sell/trade existing
hardware, to solve an issue, and worst of all, learn to use a search engine

Ardour 3 alpha worked fine during an evening of guitar recording, new apps are still
appearing with frequency, realtime and BFS kernels are easily found, and new mini-distros
are innovating and simplifying the linux experience. Linux audio production benefits
from many of these successes, and its future is bright.

Better bring some dueling banjo pickers from south county, my Fedora is armed with 1164 pages, and a linux distro shuriken to bookmark each chapter. (all those distros are good for SOMEthing after all)
But then again, my memory limit is somewhere below 755 pages, so any old fiddler might do.
