Hi there!

I made this topic because I'm still searching for some vintage synth emulations (VSTs) to use and to create that unique 80's analog vintage sound which is really amazing IMO since I never had the luck to own an 80's analog beast myself.
I already have the ones by Arturia, Korg (Legacy Collections), Memorymoon, Elektrostudio and XILS-lab. I also have some others like the OP-X PRO-II (Oberheim OB-X), PG-8X (JX-8P), JP6K (probably JP8000), TAL-U-NO-60 (Juno-60), Reaktor with Eminent-V, Solina-V and Juno-6 ensembles, Flintlock Juno-106 and EMS Synthi A VS. I'm still looking for more plug-ins that emulate some old synths from the 80's like synths by Roland, Moog, Sequential Circuits, RSF, Elka, Korg, EMS, ARP etc. I'm also looking for some vintage drum machines VSTs, but probably there are none but samples from them. I have Arturia Spark with all these samples like from TR-606, 707, 808 and 909, LinnDrum etc. but maybe there's more good stuff?

So anybody knows some free or payware products which sound nicely except the ones I mentioned above?
I know that no plug-in will sound 100% as the real synth, but I'm looking for the ones which sound as close as possible to the hardware model. Which plug-ins would you recommend me, which ones are in your opinion the best?

Thanks in advance. :)

ImpOSCar, one of my favorite VA emulations besides Korg's and Xils-Lab ones.

Vaz Modular, Ace, not emulations but nice.

d16 drum synths are great: 808, 909, 606... The Gforce synths like Minimonsta, Oddity, and Imposcar.

You could do worse than looking at the synths made by SuperWave: http://www.superwavesynths.co.uk/

There is one freeware synth, the P8, that gets a lot of praise. Of the rest Ultimate and Tarkus are the best but the others aren't at all bad. I reviewed Ultimate for Wusik Magazine a little while ago: http://issuu.com/wusik/docs/wsm_may_2001/94

Because you think that music produced in the 80's has been made only by using synths released in the 80's ......... ?

Thanks a lot for your replies. By 80's I meant that generally, surely I didn't mean synths from the 80's only. Because if people speak about vintage synths I'm always thinking from the 80's because it was the main century where music was made with these synths. By that I mean that I'm generally looking for any vintage synth emulations. Sorry, if I asked in a wrong way.

Edit: I also found this website: http://www.ele4music.com/?page_id=55

It offers some free plug-ins, also one emulating the SCI Pro-One. Anyone tested it? I'll give it a go anyway later on. Also, here I found another quite nice looking SCI Pro-One VST. But it says work in progress already since 2008?

This typical 80's sound is for me much reverb and leads from Korg synth, bass from Minimoog etc. and very melodic arrangements with interesting harmonies.
I cannot remember of some very special synth used in this time.

And to be honest, the 80's are big influenced by Trevor Horn, Stock/Aitken/Waterman. This are the big producers in this area, they produced a lot tracks this time (sometimes I think every track :D).

It's not about the synth or vintage emulation of a synth. This sounds can be created with many modern softsynth and of course also with hardware synth. The 80's is a bit of a special feeling many had this time. A bit of new romantic, electronic and often more clean sounds (some of this glassy sounds are very often used) with much reverberation.

Zebra is really good for 80s sounds and for (almost) everything else :)
There are some great 80s presets in Michael Kastrups latest Zebra bank:

Yep. Michael nailed this 70/80's sound very well with Zebra.

Surprised no one has mentioned SQ8L an emulation of Ensoniq SQ80

ImpOSCar is digital but the filters are analog (virtual) so not sure if that exactly qualifies for VA but it's great anyway. :)

I know of two pages that might help you:

www.studio-compyfox.de (look in "Projects" on that page)
www.audio-hardware-emus.com (a good friend/partner page in that section)

Granted, not limited to the 80ies, but I'm pretty sure you'll find something there.

Regarding drum machines - grab the samples you like and abuse POISE (One Small Clue) or the upcoming Maxx Claster/ImageLine Groove Machine (somewhat like Korg EXS-1). Else, if you're in Germany (which I think you are according to your location info), the Keyboards Magazine has the "Love the Machine" series, a drum VSTi coded by Urs Heckmann (U-HE) with known samples.

When I think of the 80's I think of synths like the DX7 (FM7/FM8) or M1 (Korg Legacy Collection) or PPG ( http://www.kvraudio.com/db/81)

Couple of 80's synths from my Vintage Synth folder:

Smart Electronix' Augur (free) - a Prophet VS emulation, check out some of the free banks available. Beautiful.

DaHornet (free) - EDP WASP emulation. An eigthies synth all right, but a nasty sound!
