Man, now I REALLY do need an iPad

I think I'm going to have to re-buy Alchemy soon! When will we be able to do deep editing of the additive and spectral pages?

One suggestion for touch editing is to work on an "infinite" organ method, that is come up with lots of switchable drawbar controls, so we can quickly jump around to shape our sound. Sorta like a k5000, but not painfully slow.

Having no luck trying to control Alchemy inside Live with the app (pro version) - i think my computer name is supposed to show up in the app's preset bank menu but its not there?

Im using the same ad-hoc wifi network to run touchable and i just tested it it and its working fine

Ive followed the TS guide here http://www.camelaudio.com/faqs/Alchemy_ ... op_working - didnt fix it though

Like the image on the FAQ page, you should see Alchemy on ComputerName in the bank select list. You may need to scroll down the list to see the entry.

I'll assume this is not a firewall problem, because Touchable can get through OK and it's the host that is allowed through the firewall, rather than the plugin.

Worth trying Alchemy outside of Live with a host like VST Lord (Mac) or Savihost (Win). Does that work?

Please also double check that the Alchemy File menu says "Turn Off iPhone/iPad Control" ... which indicates it is currently on, and selecting the menu item will turn it off.

I don't know how Touchable works, but it may be using a totally different type of communication. If you are familiar with the ping command you could also try pinging the IP address of your iPhone/iPad to make sure messages are getting through. Ping works on the command line, like this:

Code: Select all

ping 192.168.0.10
If the computer and iOS are communicating OK you'll see a time in ms for the round trip otherwise a message like "destination host unreachable" will be displayed. The IP address of your iOS device can be determined from the Setting network page.

Let me know if you still can't get it working / need more info about any of the above and we'll try to help.

Peace,
Andy.

Touchable uses a special server that is automatically enabled by the firewall so it will work even if the firewall blocks the host.
I had to specifically enable live in the firewall, but even before that the ios alchemy could see my pc, but connection didn't work.

Thanks for replying Andy - I can ping my ipad2 from the PC no problem - have checked the firewall settings and Live is enabled there - i even disabled the firewall completely just to check but it made no difference

Anything else to try/check? Would it be something in Live's MIDI settings?
Thanks

This is not related to Live / MIDI settings ... it's totally independent of that.

Did you install the Bonjour service while updating to Alchemy 1.25? It's an additional option during setup. You could also check Windows Services from the Control Panel / Administrator page, to make sure Bonjour is enabled.

Peace,
Andy.

Needless to say, we would never do that :) I hope no one else has been thinking similar thoughts ...

We've just released Alchemy Mobile 1.0.5 which has the following improvements:
- Fixed a bug which prevented Alchemy from starting in iOS 5 (just in time for its official release on Wednesday)
- Shiny new icon!

We're working on a bunch of new features for Alchemy Mobile to come out soon :)

I originally posted this on our forum, but I think there's more people reading this thread, so in the hopes of getting more feedback, I'm re posting it here.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are in the process of planning future updates for Alchemy Mobile and already have implemented a bunch of new features such as saving and loading projects, Sonoma copy/paste and new Pro Upgrade features such as MIDI and WAV export, bounce so you can layer up loops and MIDI sync. It'll be a while before this available out of beta, but its coming.

I've been thinking about Virtual MIDI, and whilst I can't make any promises, it is something we'd like to do. I'm trying to think about how to handle the CPU load. Its not as simple as allowing a maximum overall polyphony, because the CPU load varies based on the preset, since different presets use different synthesis engines and effects. What we could do, is when enabling Virtual MIDI (perhaps via a button labelled Virtual MIDI) to turn on sound processing in the background (should probably shut off after 15mins of no MIDI activity), a dialog is displayed which given three options for 'Poly/CPU' High, Medium and Low. High would use same CPU and have same poly as usual, medium would use 70% of default poly for each preset, and low would be 30% of default poly for each preset. You would select the appropriate option based on what other apps you intended to run at the same time. This would just set the poly when loading the preset, and you could try turning up or down the poly for the preset selected if you wished, its just if you turned it up too high, the sound would stutter and glitch. We have not found any way to reliably determine CPU use and scale back polyphony dynamically, so that doesn't appear to be a workable option. What do you think of this design?

As regards moving presets over. What we are contemplating is adding an option to Alchemy for 'Save As CamelSounds' which saves a CamelSounds file for the currently loaded preset, and then you could transfer that to Alchemy Mobile vai the usual way you transfer sounds to iOS apps via iTunes. We would choose default poly values based on the device being used to play back and so in 90% of cases the sound would play back OK without stuttering but in a few cases you'd have to adjust the polyphony value in the app which would be automatically saved into the preset. Of course sounds won't necessarily sound the same because of the restrictions of the iOS synthesis engine relative to the desktop but if the spectral resynthesis was not used the sound would generally be similar. What do you think of this?

Thanks
Ben

For some reason it seems that Alchemy is a bit on the soft side (volume), compared to my other synth's on my iPad 2.

Got master volume on full throttle but still some sounds are a little thin in that department ( bellscape etc ).

Any ideas on the subject?
