I just picked up an iPad 2 myself, but the extra RAM in the iPad 3 looks like it would have come in handy with FLStudio Mobile's sampling capabilities. 512 Mb seems really really limited for multisampled instruments (I guess it's time fore the audio wizards to bring back the magic skills of creating whole banks within 8MB. :-) (Remember, true sampling is an art as well as a skill!) ;-)

Also, to throw something else into the mix: This fall, there are supposed to be a whole bunch of new laptop/slate/tablet convertible devices coming out for Windows 8. These would run your full-featured Windows applications, PLUS work as a tablet. Just a thought..... ;-)

I am holding out for the iPad 12 which will have a full neural interface. It will come loaded with everything ever written, every program ever created and all music and movies ever made.
This space has been unintentionally left blank.

If Akai has their wits about them, they'll retool it to fit the iPad 3 before they release it and then provide an adapter to make it work with the iPad 2.

If the iPad 2 is phased out 1 year earlier than the iPad 3, would that really be worth the $100 savings?

Those things are hotter than Jessica Alba in a sauna. My next laptop will be a Windows 8 tablet with a quad core processor and a thunderbolt port, that's a promise.

Personally, I just returned my iPad 3 to Apple. I liked it well enough but didn't think it added much to my life that my iPhone 4S didn't already.

Whether this is profitable depends on how far they are in their production. There was a prototype at NAMM 2012 and they have announced a release this summer, so if the factories are up running, the ball is rolling.
Another option would be to release an iPad2 version this year and if this becomes a bestseller, maybe a iPad 3 version next year. The synthstation 49 has been delayed for a year now and certainly hope they have learned their lesson from that one.

Cheers

In my case it was actually $172.46 (not quite $200... will correct), but again, if you read my first post, it's not just about the money. All the points in that post swayed my decision. I found used iPad2's going for ridiculous prices on eBay (even higher than the refurb price!) so for a little more it made sense to get a refurb with the new battery and warranty. I could even get Applecare, but I have a strong feeling I'll be moving up to the new iPad next year. ;)

Like I said. It's a personal decision. To each his/her own.

I'll be holding out for the iPad 13 now, the one that will pre-emptively download apps not created yet. I hope they ship with enough RAM... :hihi:

I don't get this fear. Anything that runs on the iPad 3 will run on the iPad 2. As already stated multiple times, the processing power is nearly identical. Also, with all the 2's currently out there, any developer would be foolish to create an app that wouldn't work on them.

If you look hard, you can get a 64GB iPad 2 on ebay for under $400. Once I get some free cash, I'm going swap out my 16GB for a 64GB. Even if I eventually replace it with a future tablet, it will still be useful as a controller and synth module.

My apologies, I missed that post and was answering within the context of the OP's question. That was my mistake. Also, immediately after writing that, I jumped on to eBay to search for 64GB iPad 2's and found that they're running close to half the price of 64GB iPad 3's, which is actually pretty appealing to me.

Yeah, I get this. Also, I'm sure my tune will completely change once the MPC Fly and iDJ Pro are released. ;)

Well, not sure about that!

interesting to read.. i almost bought an ipad2 today but i held off as it didnt have ios5 loaded (i'd have to use wifi at the local library to update, a bit of a pain on a new toy!) I'm thinking of getting 3 now, i'll be a bit broker for a week or two but it's worth pushing the budget sometimes i think , in the long run.

For music, currently the iPad 2 is adequate. The "New" iPad is just Retina, 5mp camera, and 4g enhanced. Quad core graphics won't help us in music and as I read, the cpu is still running pretty much the same. The possible additional ram will make a difference- if apps use it that is. I personally notice a huge difference in the size between the 2 and New- and it is so silly since on paper, there is not much of an increase in size and weight- but you do notice it coming from a 2 to the New. The Retina display, although fantastic, won't really help us on the music side EXCEPT for score/lead-sheet reading- that is where you will notice it. We already complain a lot about music apps that have little dials and knobs- having a higer resolution display so they can even go smaller makes no sense for a touch interface. So if you can score a great deal on a used 2- it should last you for a couple of years (or until next year to be honest). I sell the New and feel it is aimed for gamers and graphical content creators (and new iPad owners). It's not a smart upgrade for most 2 owners- but is a great upgrade for 1 owners.
Just my opinion.
