Because it doesn't conform to the normal VST behaviour, Razor is a bit of an untapped goldmine, bit like scanned synth pro.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

The say it's not a bug  But how can that be. When on "hertz" if you play a chord and it's not dead-on, or hit another note, the LFO is on. If you use "beat", and you are not dead on, it sounds out of whack. AND if you hit an additional note, it's LFO is different than than the original notes :x

How can this be "normal" behavior  ?

Post

I think the LFO may be tied to note, so the higher the note the faster it will oscillate. Maybe a polyphonic LFO.... Have to give the manual a read.

Just bought it! 8)
Unique and fun to play with! :)
A bit CPU hungry (high quality mode) with "fairly" limited flexibility. (the cool stuff kinda makes up for it - but still.. who doesn't want to modulate the envelope times or the LFO speed for example? :D)

Some extreme settings makes it sound a bit nasty, in that case, try the random phase knob.. you can't miss it! ;) (that, if readjusting the envelopes, the phase and switching to a higher quality mode doesn't do the trick)

..and btw, just found out that one can save fxp settings with the Reaktor Player... but only after registering Razor.
A bit annoying I know, but it's a workaround! :)

So do we have a conclusion to this question?

Can we reliably save our presets on Razor without buying Reaktor? I would love to work on a bank for example. But if it's going to be hit and miss I won't be able to...

I just gave it a go and I say yes, you can absolutely save and load presets. Most recent versions of Reaktor player and Razor installed.

Read somewhere that NI enabled preset saving in Reaktor 'Player' only in a very recent update, so having the latest version is probably a 'must'.

What is so special about Razor? Is there anything it can do better than Massive or Absynth (i already have NI Komplete)?

Well, sound wise, it's pretty f/n thick. I think quite a bit thicker/fuller than massive tbh. I'm just p/oed about the LFO "hertz" VS "beat" thing not working properly.

It's really difficult to explain though. I have the macprovideo "how to" and a groove three pass (they do massive) and razor just has a much fuller sound (even from the start) It's pretty cpu intensive though, I think more so than massive.

I fear it is the same with massive, so harsh and rather cold sounding, sort of big and mean wavestation. Is it just me who misses something like a pro-53 in NI collections?

Post

You might be right. I do understand the "harsh/cold" thing, but it's all taste. My reason for buying razor was that the "komplete" voucher had so few possibilities

About Razor being cold, harsh and not sitting well in a mix. I think it clearly sounds digital but I also think it in general sits well in mixes.

Since I have a day off, I spent some 30 minutes and made a short demo clip using a couple of instances of Razor, Sylenth1 and Diva together with some loops. No eQ, no effects and no mastering. Mixing was done in matter of minutes so it's far from perfect. There is muddiness of course without any use of eQ and sounds just being picked out of factory presets or my own previously made presets. All that being said. I feel that Razor sits there quite nice, even with Diva.

Dunno how "reliably", I just did a quick test in FL Studio 10 and it worked... patch loaded! Although I suspect that if one starts to do a bank, it won't have more presets than the actual factory bank ...about 352 was it? .. with Reaktor Player of course.

Added: Another way you can save presets.
I have version 5.6.2 of Reaktor Player running v. 1.2.0 of Razor, and there are options to save and load presets under the File drop-down menu. So you can save as many as you like. :D But if you want to neatly group them in a bank, than I guess you would need the full version of Reaktor.

I don't know who mentioned that it sounded harsh but I disagree.

It does sound digital and bright in some cases but in a good way.
Instead of "harsh" , sometimes it has artifacts which sound like a combination of aliasing and sample rate "jitter" but it can be tamed quickly...

So far, I see it as an opposite of Diva in character! :D

Razor simply sounds different with it's own "digital" (in a good way) sound quality.

I find Massive to sound OK, but I never really liked it's sound...

What's special about it? It's features.. it's a different experience altogether.

All I know is there are pad patches where I could play a C 2 note and it sounds very clear and big. Not too many synths can play a note that low and not sound distorted or just plain bad. There is an update. I know the link I got was for v1.10, but when I ran NI Service Center it downloaded v 1.20.
I did look at the manual yesterday , and the LFO's are mono, don't retrigger , and are made to do weird offbeat things. If you sync 1 with 2 it can get weirder.
Is there an FX version of Razor? I haven't even tried the vocoder and would love not having the hassle of linking the input to the soundcard. Wouldn't that mean everything coming into the soundcard gets passed through?
Would also love to be able to use as an FX because the Chorus and the Reverbs are humdingers.
Razor FX NI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
