You might be onto something there.Nanakai wrote:Funny enough, indie bands seem to have this problem, too. Think way outside the box - find a low frequency word and put it into binary, or use a hex value.
Picking a dj name... how hard can it be??

And by the time you come up with one that doesn't suck you have a wife and kids and suddenly a Dj name sounds ever so childish!ramo_and wrote:Hi,
I tried for a while now to pick a serious dj name but it feels like it's impossible. Every suggestion I've come up with either sucks or is taken already....
But I've got one name now which I like... but I just did a search on discogs and there I found a greek (I think) trance producer with the same name who has released one song about 7 years ago.
Does this mean that I can't use the name that I've come up with? Of course it would be best to use a name that is totally unique but for me it seems impossible to get a unique name that sounds good aswell.

Here you go, corpus of spoken English words ordered by frequency:
http://ucrel.lancs.ac.uk/bncfreq/lists/ ... ritten.txt
Scroll to the bottom and start mixing words. Look at these options - Arrested Grandfather, Hope Arise, Dioxide Force or (my personal favorite) Damp Breast Victims. Not low-frequency enough? Grab a thesaurus or dictionary. Thumb to a random page. Use an abbreviation. Make an acronym from a bunch of other cool-sounding words. Hack any word in half and add another word to it. All of this too much work for you? Make a computer do it.
http://watchout4snakes.com/creativityto ... dPlus.aspx
Set complexity to "Obscure" and combine with the above ingredients. If none of this gets you anything unique enough, then empty a can of Spaghetti-O's on the floor. See what you can spell out.
Too unique? Poach names from history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_we ... al_figures
Here's your name: Medicikahn. But don't stop there, try generating more names using any of the above methods. Keep anything pronounceable in English. If even 1/5 of what you create has already been registered as an artist's name, I'd be flabbergasted.
When you're done with this dumb bullsh*t, go make some music.

Thanks guys for all the replies!
I have a name now that I like.. But like I said there's a European company with the same name. Do I need to worry about that? Do I need to get "permission" from them to use the name?
EDIT: My plan is not to just DJ in the local pub. I produce my own tracks and if I become succesful I don't want to get sued or anything like that.

nah... only thing you need to worry about is whether you or them give more hits on google.ramo_and wrote:Do I need to worry about that? Do I need to get "permission" from them to use the name?
my band has the same name as some swedish gaming clan and some australian company, we get most hits i think but it still sucks because we thought about the name for a long time and thought it'd be extremely unique.
we actually thought that if we ever toured australia we could take a picture of our band in front of the company's offices as a joke.

Avoid the dj name altogether maybe. If you want to be unique, use your own name. There are endless dj names. Especially with "dj" in them.

I think I'm right in saying that Thomas Dolby was taken to court by Dolby Laboratories, but the ruling allowed him to continue using the Dolby name providing it was always preceded by 'Thomas', so if there is a company with the same name as yours you could probably argue that by always having 'DJ' in front of it will make it a unique name unrelated to the company and therefore not a trademark infringement
IANAL but best of luck to you!
