It is there in the options ... devices. I didn't install anything. I just chose it. The latency for 512 buffer is 10ms which is fine by me. With asio4all it was 16ms with the same buffer.

The bit section is grayed out and the 16bit selected. But in the upper right corner of the project (tracks mode), the info indicates 48kh and 24bit! So, I don't know really which one reaper is using.
Maybe the internal one is 24bit but the sound card one (real one?) is 16bit! I need to read about this topic and see if it is possible to record and play back in 24bit or higher resolution while the sound card is only 16bit?!
What i know from previous old desktop system, i could only choose 16bit for onboard sound card. I couldn't choose 24bit.
I don't know if my laptop sound card is only 16bit or it is capable of 24bit as well!
Anyway, I hope i can buy a usb audio interface soon with 24bit. This + Reaper would be the same price as Studio one studio or sonar x1 studio ;-)

I know there is no "perfect" system, but I really want to reach a stable system with reaper. I will try everything possible before I reach to a final conclusion.

Thanks all for your replies.
Have you run Reaper 4.x at all?

Don't judge Reaper from older versions(<v4.x).

Two and a half years ago when I tested Reaper I had plenty instabilities. I could not even route tracks without strange fenomena. It was 3.6 then.

For what its worth I just switched back to Reaper from Studio One and way prefer it personally. Definitely you have configure it the way you way it, but thats just the thing: you CAN configure it so that everything is pretty much just how you like to work.

Should be 16-bit by default. This is changed in Control Panel->Sound. WASAPI is OS audio protocol, so audio formats are changed in Control Panel, system-wide change. I have 256 samples buffer with WASAPI here with no problems at all (~5.8/11 ms).

Yes, I run 4.261

I will try not to judge it based on previous experiences. I have an open mind about it.

@braj:
Reaper is really nice but I don't think the way the configuration is, would help to win new users who don't have much experience.
I believe it needs a redesign of the menu and items instead of just explaining the best way to configure it. Maybe a reaper version called "Easy Reaper"! It is not so difficult to do because the functionality is already there, just present it with an easier interface.
With Studio One I didn't need to search or read on how to configure this or that. It is there with just a click or right click away. But that doesn't make Studio One the better choice considering the price and cpu usage which reaper is better (IMO).

@EvilDragon:
Thanks a lot :-) Indeed it is showing that my system can support 24bit with 48khz! So, that's saved me some money cause I won't buy an audio interface.

Back to my colorful tracks ;-)

Yeah I agree the menus can use some work, a simplified menu option would be good, no doubt. There is an extension that does that actually just obviously it isn't by default so not exactly wht a new user would ever see.

About menues - did you search the themes forum at cockos?

I imagine there are menu configs where people have gone through and cleaned up a bit.

You can import/export menues easily.

Just guessing...

I don't know that this is compatible with SWS extension, I'd choose that over any other extension set at this time.

OK, I'm trying this out, it actually depends on SWS so that's good. I need to get used to this setup now :) but a new user would be benefitted the most I imagine. But if you are using a manual or book that is describing features in certain menus it might be a bit hard to grasp BECAUSE of this menu.

This is nice to know! So, I can import/export the menu items!
No, I didn't check this but I'll do. Thanks :-)

It seems there are useful SWS extensions for reaper. I'll check them.

SWS extensions are utterly indispensable, as far as I am concerned. Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't use 'em.

Yep, I don't know if I could really use Reaper without them.

Good, down to Earth, discussion, guys. :)

I use Reaper for a very long time, since pre 1 version [0.9 I think], and it took a long time to get where it is now, however time well used. ;) The surprising part is that I never really used it for serious music making until v4, though. Only now I think it's ready for me to give it a real go. So far, I was really satisfied with doing most of the things in EnergyXT1 and mixing in Reaper. Doing everything completely in Reaper has always been a little not-there-yet, until this version, for me.

I say v4 is really worth it, and it is more stable than EnergyXT, and more efficient than other DAWs.

But I do definitely agree with some points... like the menus could use an overhaul, and there are still some weird things that I cannot get my head around like MIDI parts playing while I'm moving them around and you pass a cursor with it. That's terrible. :(

Reaper
Likes - affordable , powerful , no bloat , small download , customizable , nice track db metering , great user base and forum , , a tracks a track concept , automation though I rarely use it . one version ( no lite, pro, or superpro version) the commercial and non-comercial license is the same. VERY usable . Only $60 to disable the nag screen on the demo , affordable upgrades , word of mouth non- commercial marketing and Justin and Schwa are cool dudes !!
Dislikes - In a nut shell the GUI's defaults , or user defaults , hunting thru drop down menus defaults for basic stuff , I hate this one Media browser docks and blocks the mixer .... ouch ? No default 2 sends and returns already setup ? also hate these too. No paint , No scissor , or No eraser tool ..... what get outta here ?

It just lacks some basic simple tools and GUI user defaults for the average users workflow . I'd like to see them clear and clean this up for version 5 . I think it'd attract more users . Other than that its a great and usable tool .
