For reference then
I've found it to be incredibly useful for editing vocals - really great to even out peaks, take out sibilance / etc. Then you use the compressors for the color.

Yep, it's a little better than most actually.
AVID did what very smart developers should always do when copying features, actually make them better, and they did that, made it better. Cubase (for an off topic example) has had both clip gain and editable gain envelopes on clips for like, forever, but AVID did the smart thing and went a little beyond that by also allowing it to be coalesced with track automation.
I know it really annoys non-PT users to hear PT guys raving about something that has, for like 95% of it, existed most everywere else for 10-15 years
but they did actually make it a little better, as they should have.
Credit where due.

I think the point was that S1 DOESN'T have it.
Reaper and Cubase also have had it for many years, but PT's implementation is really well done. Only those obsessed with irrationally hating PT would say otherwise.

PT often brings out the worst in people and PT fans don't help very much with that.hibidy wrote:My hate is totally rational
Nah, I don't hate pro fools, I just wasn't able to keep up. If someone else can/is willing/etc, groovy!
An objective example (really, I'm being objective
But no doubt, PT 10 clip gain is pretty nice. It is indeed a nice red cherry.

My experience with pro tools was got it, liked it, but couldn't keep up. Then I decided I just HAD to have a mac and logic and that killed that (had a motu card) and never looked at it seriously since then.
Between dongle, the rtas/aax/whatever they are using now limits and that it's still not even x64 I just don't have any real interest. Besides, it's not like I'd get anything done anyways

- edit cursor
- good color scheme
- adding inserts across multiple tracks simultaneously
- ability to edit layers without promoting first
- ability to generate layers when outside of loop recording mode (for example, on overlap)
- EuCon support
- scoring
- clip gain
- good automation editing workflow
Of course, PT is missing plenty from S1 as well, so there we have it
only these i really agree with is needed now...other stuff or jus "extra" bassed on how u record.

- clip gain??? -_____- u can adjust volume like clip from version..and almost every other program adjust volume like that from about 2004 or earlier..

But this feature is in Studio One since version 1. Have you really tried Studio One? From what I can see you're just inducing people in error.5Lives wrote:For reference then

He's apparently talking about editable clip gain envelopes, which S1 doesn't have. Just about every DAW except PT has had basic clip gain for many years now but I don't know how many also have editable clip gain envelopes like Cubase, Reaper, and now PT10. Those are two different envelopes, the global gain for the clip and the secondary envelope that can be edited like automation.
S1 doesn't that second one yet.
And again, for those not reading my earlier comment, neither Cubase nor Reaper nor S1 allows clip gain to be coalesced with track automation, afaik.
The editable clip gain envelope is handy because you can make numerous level changes to a clip without splitting it up. It's essentially pre-fx gain automation. Pretty useful for vocals.
I'm not a big PT fan but that thing (the editable envelope) is what it is. I know what it is because I had it in Cubase for about 10 years.
Anyway, when it comes to envelopes for audio clips in general, Reaper is maybe the best model.

Why don't you get a plugin like Blue Cat Gain Suite (free) or Cerberus Audio Volt Precision Fader, insert it as the first plugin on each channel and automate, wouldn't that be the same?
