Ahh, this is sweet! Like an electronic gulab jamun.

Yeah the bassline is groovy enough, and the ragas played on synths sound awesome too. Sweet indeedhimalaya wrote:Ahh, this is sweet! Like an electronic gulab jamun.

It doesn't surprise me that people were creative in the 1980s. My mind would have been 'blown' if you had said it had been made in 2013.
Cool Track.

That's kinda true. I guess the more people have access to, the more complacent they get.Aloysius wrote:It doesn't surprise me that people were creative in the 1980s. My mind would have been 'blown' if you had said it had been made in 2013.

Dusted Magazine has a review of the album here:
http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/6094
Interestingly, it says everything was recorded in a single take (!).
Peace,
Andy.

I'd have to agree. We have more possibilities on our phones than people had in their studios 30 years ago but the spirit of adventure seems to be lacking.srv-musikmaker wrote:That's kinda true. I guess the more people have access to, the more complacent they get.

That's quite an achievement judging by the complexity of the melodies in certain sections.ZenPunkHippy wrote:Dusted Magazine has a review of the album here:

Indian rhythms and song structure are quite complex, difficult for western musicians to grasp, and even more difficult for them to play. It's rather comical really for them to "go disco." Hard to see how it's still a Raga, but I'm no expert.
I wonder if this was inspired a bit by Shakti. John McLaughlin is still doing East meets West. Check out Industrial Zen.

Charanjit Singh is classically trained so i wouldn't expect anything else but perfectly executed soloing. In fact, calling this an 'achievement' shows how far removed we are from music performance skills nowadays.
The 'one take' claim is also not surprising.
Sequenced 303 bass
Sequenced 808 drums
an arpeggiated line (what synth?)
that leaves the chords and the lead line performed live (on the Jupiter 8 I guess).
That second track is equally as sweet but it's also very beautiful, with a very nice 'mood'. That 303 bass is so nice here...Vocoded mantra lines...

Charanjit Singh 2010 = loads of analog modular gear, which is what we could've logically expected. Right?
Some poignant moments there, in that video...specifically right at the end where Mr.Singh looks at the CD edition of his album.
I wonder what came out of the idea to have him play some old school synths and beatboxes again? I think, don't stop at analog only. Have him explore stuff like the DSI Evolver, some Waldorf wavetable sounds, Korg Z1...etc

This might be of interest to people just discovering RAGA music (like me).

LOL, I was just sequencing all those 10 ragas myself. Got all the basslines and arpeggio's done, and almost have two of the solo parts down as well.
I mentioned this album before recently (and a long time a go). I really love this stuff. Mr. Singh is touring Europe currently - I already have my tickets for both gigs he'll be doing on the 20th in Nijmegen.
The gig in Berghain with A Guy Called Gerald should also be pretty interesting...
