Depends what is the goal. If it's for ambient and such, Padshop (Pro, to load your own samples in there) is one hell of a granular synth. Ultra smooth and buttery for silky pads and drones, I own and use many granular synths & tools and this one is probably the smoothest one. Alchemy doesn't sound as velvet as Padshop but with its modulation capacities it's a pretty solid contender to consider.

Reaktor is fun with TONS of granular ensembles, but for ambient sounds I've never really liked its granular sound and always had a hard time making it sounds smooth. Sounds pretty low quality compared to some others imo. I guess it could be cool for glitch and noisy stuff though.

Another useful tool is Granite, which excels at turning everything you throw at it into luscious modulating blankets of sound. It's a bit more difficult to coax it into twitchy, spiky territory, but that's not where its strengths lie. I've had loads of fun loading minor chords into it then pitching them around to create a kind of spectral twist on old-school rave.

It's not sample-based granular exactly, but Rayblaster is fantastic for other-worldly sounds, it's essentially a mix between single cycle waveforms and granular/sync/AM techniques but you can load longer samples like loops too. Rayblaster makes really unique sounds that can exist in the space between periodic and aperiodic (tonal and noise) - I think it's just one of those synths you have to understand because of the workflow, and it's manual and promo material seems deliberately vague and almost misleading, which is a shame because the synth is a goldmine, though it can be quite harsh and blatty, with a good set of filters after it it can makes sounds that blow my mind.

at $99 reaktor is kind of a no brainer. the user library is chocked full of amazing things and lot's of granular stuff and really more on offer there than anyone needs.

obvious granular answer is also Granite.

Reaktor is really the only thing you'll ever need to explore a world if granular synthesis. Of course, Live 9 / Max 4 Live offers another whole world of granular exploration. I love 'em both.

It's basically another DAW, but there are no better granulators than the native ones in Ross Bencina's excellent AudioMulch (http://www.audiomulch.com/). There are three - the BubbleBlower, which is a granulation sound generator in which a sample is loaded directly into the device and the grains are manipulated; the DLGranulator which is an effect line granulator (granulates an incoming signal); and the Nebulizer which is an effect line granulator with a low pass filter. AudioMulch will also host all your other VST plug-ins, and features automation, but not MIDI note recording. 5 thumbs up for AudioMulch.

Also in the standalone world there is Rasmus Ekmun's venerable Granulab (http://hem.passagen.se/rasmuse/Granny.htm). The 8-voice version is now FREE. You want hell noise granulation? Granny's got it.

This is crazy, there are so many options I am overwhelmed.

Couldnt try Padshop Pro, the demo installed didnt worked on my computer.
Have been playing with the Crusher FX demo and its really insane.
Max 4 Live looks really interesting, but too expensive at this time for me.
AudioMulch looks too nerdy for me (I dont want to get into programming).

To start, I think Im going for Reaktor, or Komplete if I can find a really good deal. Absynth looks really interesting for me as well.
