Hey all,

Im doing a CD for Christmas - just something to give to friends and family (although I should probably be sending to my enermies, lol!).

I need to knock up a front and back cover, but Im not sure which software I should be using. Could anyone recommend a good app for the job? Sounds stupid, but I dont even know if any of the 'Office' programs do this... they probably do so I'll have to get the other comp fired up and check.

Anyway, regardless, Id love to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Cheers!

Just use your photo editor and get some templates from somewhere like furnace manufacturing.

If you don't have a good photo editor get GIMP
It is not as good as Photoshop but it is pretty darn good, FREE , and 50x better than MS paint

It does layers which is what you need if you ever send off the art for duplication.

Last time I made some kind of jewel case package (a couple of years ago) I did the images, title and band logo in GIMP and used a (slightly modified) MS word jewel case template for finalizing. I just checked - don't have the template any longer, but should be quite easy to find office templates on the web.

Oh, just go ahead and use Word so you can be like all my dumbfuck print customers. :P

You can get totally acceptable stuff out of Word (use plenty of Word Art for a pro look ;)) If you have a fairly complete Office then you may even have MS Publisher. I hear that's the preferred format by print shops. (ignore that last sentence, just needlessly taunting the pros... :D)

You could look at paint.net which has layers so could be used for a background image, titles etc with some flexibility. Easier than Gimp.

I prefer Publisher far & away over MS Word, so this statement is actually somewhat correct. Far more than the one above anyway. :P

Nero had the nest one I've ever used and if you scroll to the bottom of the page link it's now a free download.
It is foolproof.

Actually, last time I did one I used a Word template that I downloaded that had the correct sizes and cutting guidelines. I think added text where that's what I needed and created the rest of the cover with GIMP.

for the record I hate Word, I've lost count of the number of times I've lost it just typing up some simple documentation. Heaven forbid a numbered list remembers which bloody font your using...

i guess your more of an excel gal then? at least stuff tends to stay where you put it in excel... :hihi:
