For me it's always been about a great melody that's delivered over a pounding kick, and rumbling bass line - but only after a 5 minutes shiver me timbers teary eye hands in the air breakdown and buildup.

The melodies are definitely the main thing though.

I think that this is what most people who are dyed in the wool EDM fans but trance haters generally mean. Although I'm not quite at the "love" stage with psy and goa, I really like well done hard trance and acid trance as well as classic trance.

If you listen to the above track you can hear the genetic material that fueled tarnce, but, what you also hear is some restraint, and that's the crux of the matter. Whether we're talking about the silliness of X-step, gangsta-rap, or tarnce, it's all about the combination of not necessarily intrinsically bad music elements with an almost total absence of restraint.

Well, IMNSHO, anyway.

depends on how good it is. that was wise :D

I love music, period. From mariachi to dark metal, from baroque to tarnce.

Of course, there are excellent and awful artists in all genres, but there is not any one kind of music I hate per se.

I love trance! ...and I also hate it!

..that statement for generalization.

C'mon guys, you should all know that there is this commercial side of music that is "uniquely" ruining genres one after the other. The more interesting the "genre" the more it happens sooner or later with different consequences.

I will always have respect for trance I guess.... I had the opportunity to learn "trance" in my own way and time... and it's a beautiful feeling.

I don't agree with the commercial side but I love good music!...

Does trance/tarnce have teh autotunes, teh oh oh ohs and teh rap parts?

I do listen to this stuff occasionally, I like most forms of music, but what puts me off is its so predictable. Atmospheric start, beats come in, build up, a quiet bit, build up, a dramatic flourish of (trance type) synths, build up, more stuff, wait for it, wait for it for another 16 bars and then - full on trance. I used to like that old school acid house/rave stuff back in the day because they never quite got the 'formula' right, it used to fade out at the wrong point, stuff was chucked in in inappropriate times and it was funny

I heard of "psychedelic" trance long before I actually heard it.

What I imagined was some heavenly amalgam of the psychedelic trance-inducing music I'd experienced -- Jimi Hendrix, Ravi Shankar, Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew," John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Terry Riley's "A Rainbow in Curved Air."

What I heard sounded more like the Energizer bunny on crack. I know there's some good stuff (I really dig Shpongle and Shakatura) but the run-of-the-mill is painfully predictable. There's a big difference between simplistic and simple.

I've heard people say "well, you have to be high" or "you have to be there to get it" but that is different from all the great music I've experienced, where the music is transcendent and sufficient in itself, and everything on top of it is gravy.

ZenPunkHippy makes an interesting point about the repetitiveness of the music allowing for interesting social interactions to take place. I can respect that...but it's also damning the music with faint praise. For repetitive music, I prefer funk, reggae and Afrobeat, where the repetition requires physical commitment and a certain mental discipline and spiritual humility on the part of the players.

I love repetitive stuff. I don't need to have my music intellectuality intense. I've got a problem with more vocal stuff (especially any kinda autotuned/cher effect stuff)

The crap I make these days is instrumental and electronic mostly. Maybe because it's easier, maybe because it's just way more fun. I dunno.

There is a swathe of it I dont want to listen to. Somehow, though, I can manage to not like something without hating it, although I know that that sort of thing is pretty much heresy round here.
That's pretty much my attitude. I try to keep it up, simply because you can get inspired by the silliest/cheesiest stuff.

It's rare for me to find something that is completely devoid of the tiniest creative spark.
Though some tarnce producas seem to work toward that goal. Meh, same with indie rock, house or what have you.

I don't know much about trance but the impression I got from a few pieces that I've heard is that they could be algorithmically generated. You could have a trance app that generates complete trance tracks. A style that is so predictable and repetitive quickly becomes dull to me. I don't mind repetitive electronic music but I like it when it sounds like there is a human at the controls making creative decisions. I don't like listening to something that sounds like machines running on autopilot.

Of course, I could be completely wrong because I've only heard a handful of trance tracks but maybe my comments will provoke some interesting discussion.
