Belated thanks for taking the time to listen and comment on my entry - sadly I have been a very poorly boy (morphine injection yesterday in the butt

- long story... )

but I'm catching up!

I appreciate the comments - I was trying to avoid a cliché 'backing/melody' tune and create an animated etherial atmosphere with lots of industrial/technological/mechanical components...
(more twaddle!)

I think the 'twingly-twingly' sound is as near as it gets to a melody!
The twingly -twingly noise was an orchestral sample pitched up 85 semitones in Acid!

Wow, so many cool submissions and not enough time to review them all... So a brief mention of the favourites will have to do:

"Things" (Donkey Tugger): Bloody hell, it's the lost "Quake II" theme song! Why the heck they choose that sissy-ass Rob Zombie music instead of this for that game beats me, 'coz this IS the Quake II theme song. Really. Wicked stuff.

"Intergalactic Eye" (Sleek Month): Catchy tune, love the vocals and the whole future-retro thing, this would be great for a Flash Gordon parody methinks. Mmmm, spandex costumes...

"Against a dark background" (Scuzzphut): Great bouncy tune, cool drums and bass, would fit nicely into the next Luc Besson space epos. Just tell him I said so.

"The New Gods" (EarthTones): Dark and punchy, makes me wanna fly a space-cruiser at warp 10 through a meteor field, just for the hell of it. Nice!

"Cometshine" (Eric Bourne): Fantastic swirling track, both happy and melancholic at the same time, like the soundtrack to the birth and death of stars... *sniff* Oh dear, must have gotten something in my eye...

"Do you?" (Sason Le Klee): If Barbarella was hip and groovy, she'd dig this. I dig this, however I do not look as good as her when getting naked in an anti-gravity field.

I'll write some more if I can be bothered. Great work everybody!

A few reviews:

Unicon - fragments of the soul: . Great drum programming. Atmospheric. The guitar (?) is a bit whimpy, I would like a bit more power.

Beardedone - the test:. Starts out very nice, quite orchestral. Then it goes too much into impro-mode IMO. But I really love those strings at 1.30 - 2.00.

Earthtones -the new gods: . that beat in the intro sounds familiar, is it stylus? The tune has loads of development, which is great. I find the bassline is a bit too mid 90's though. But it has a sort of completeness to it. Nice.

Plunge - be somebody: I just loove that voice. I could have been without the backing vocals though. Very catchy chorus. Very funky track. As you say, it's supposed to be like Will Smiths theme, but it's not sci-fi enough for my taste. But otherwise a great track. will's track is not that sci-fi either though. Musically the track could have been in a comedy as well. I hope that makes sense.

Wopelka - space cimitary: sorry to pick on you, but there's quite a few tunes like this in this months entries. Very atmosphic, very sci-fi, would fit well in a film. But, I just wouldn't call this a theme at all. There's nothing particularly recognisable.
Having said that, I really like all the small noises that happens in the background.

Ixox - Evil walk: this reminds me of Star wars, which is not bad. It has a lot of suspense, keeps me on the edge of the seat. The sounds are good as well. I wouldn't have minded a bit more variation though.

Glooper - captain starman If the tunes were only 30 sec. I would have you as a winner. The intro smokes. Nice touch to have vocals, although I don't particularly find the part after 0.30 sec. very sci-fi.

Seperitoth - Bionickles The video is a really nice touch although it's obvious that the tune is not made for the video. You have a lot of interesting things happening. Loads of dynamic, which is great. The drums are a little out of place when they kick in at 1.37 sec. but works before that. It would also help if you got some better quality sounds, 'cause the composition is good.

Jtxx000 - the chain: starts out very well. A lot of atmosphere in this tune. You manages to mix guitar in a tune and still make it sound sci-fi. Great. Ends a bit abrupt though. But I can definately hear a theme here. My head is nodding already from the beginning.

Bitstream - DNA dreams:

This tune is just lovely. Well produced and mixed. Doesn't have a lot variation, but this style doesn't need it. This is just the sort of music I wanted to listen to right now. I'm still considering how sci-fi it is though.

Sorry, if these reviews are a bit harsh. These are actually the tunes I like

yep, i have to admit i have underestimated the word "theme" in the Scuzzphut's contest theme. I just went for a sci-fi soundtrack. English is not my native language and sometimes i lose some details...

Admitidally it's not a Kubrick, Terminator, Alien, type theme music... I went for the more Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Lost in Space, kind of thing. Kids B Movie, Comic book western, based in space!

If it still doesn't work for you... just turn it off at 30 seconds

Actually, if Besson made a movie called "Against a Dark Background" I believe it would make all of us pretty happy.

I like my sci-fi themes to be like Star wars, Star trek, 2001, Terminator, Blade runner, Robocop, Back to the future, Batman, E.T. etc. OK!!!!
