Ok folks, so the last poll turned into a huge debate :D (http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... &start=105), so I took the best out of it, fixed some things... and I even got quite fond of the Meldator thingy :D...

So here's the last poll.

Please do NOT answer anything, just choose :D. Unless you have some great constructive idea of course ;). But no more brainstorming or the synth will never be released :D.

I cannot approve the MSynth, simply because I want to try something creative and this is a creative plugin, not mentioning there could be multiple synthesizers in the future.

* = this seems to me like a good idea for a future effect actually ;)

MMonster is a bit close to MiniMonsta which is already a very well respected synth and you might get the litigation happy Monster cables on your ass with that one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_%2 ... k_disputes

Most of those names are terrible ... voted for MPulse (again).

Seems like a duel between MPower and MPulse. Well, they say "Pulse" exists, but so what... MPulse is no Pulse ;)

I haven't heard the synth yet (at work) but voted for MBoss through process of elimination.

MTurbo sounds like an effect or car.
MPower... energy company.

and so on...

MFish

But there is already a synth called impulse

Well, I don't think that matters, MPulse is not impulse

I voted MMonster.

Why?

I agree that MPower and MPhatik can be used for future new effects. But in my opinion, I would put the same asterisk to:
  • MTurbo (for a future compressor product)
  • MPulse (for a future PWM effect product or for a future groove machine)
Remains : MMonster, MMeldator, MMeldulator, MBoss.

Why didn't I choose MBoss? Because a Boss needs employees to work. It would be adequate if the synth was simply a huge set of oscillators to use with all external modules (filters, envelopes, etc.) in cascade after it. It's not the case. It is a huge comprehensive synth. So I wouldn't not call it Boss.

I add that it would be adequate for a future composition editor, for example... because that, it is really a MBoss! It is the orchestra conductor of all the VSTI's!

Why didn't I choose MMeldator. Because you change only one letter... and all the french speakers (France, Switzerland, Belgium, Quebec, etc.) will laugh out loud. Which letter? The "L"... You change it by a "R" and you get "MMerdator". A choice to left aside imperatively. Even many english native speakers know to what image it alludes.

The same for MMeldulator. For the same reasons. And you can add another reason: it is a complex word in its structure. Not at all a word to keep in a marketing domain.

Remains: MMonster. It is quite representative of the complexity of the synth, of its abilities, of its number of panels, of all the things that can be done. It is easy to pronounce, easy to remember... and it is quite sale oriented with a popular term which makes dream of all the things the user will be able to produce with his mind and his fingers. Some cars have a monster under the hood, and we all dream to have a monster in our musical stuff. So I chose MMonster, the term which gathers all the qualities.

Damn, that's all correct... But the Monster company (whatever it is, never heard that exists) looks scary :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_%2 ... k_disputes

I don't understand how anyone can own the word though...that can happen only in US...

Monster is a common name in the dictionary. It belongs to the patrimony of the humanity as all the common names, so it can't be patented by anybody. It means that nobody can't attribute himself the property of it, like any other common name. Only original words can be patented and declared as restricted properties.

"MMonster" can be declared as original property and patented by yourself if you create a product with that specific name, and it becomes your property. But "Monster", being a common name without any modification, can't be owned by nobody. And nobody can't forbid you to create an original word (and trade mark) based on "monster" with a modification never used yet. You can ask it freely to any advocate specialized in international marketing, he will answer the same thing.

Not sure if this helps you, but if i was in your place i would not deviate from a well-working naming schema 'just because i can'. On the contrary, since all other MeldaProduction plugins are named M<TypeOfPlugin>, (which was good thinking since a user always knows instantly what kind of plugin he is dealing with), i would simply name it MSynthesizer because for one thing it would remain perfectly in line with the traditional MeldaProduction naming schema and for another it is also very easy to remember.

(Not to mention of course that it is relatively safe with regards to trademarks and meaning in french.) :hihi:

So how did Apple protect their name, then?

Or don't they have any protection, and I can found a company or create a product called Apple?
