I think I'm gonna go for either the Grado RS1 or the Sennheiser HD650, but what would think I should do?

Sennheiser HD650

I will use this headphone for music production but also like hook it up to my Apple Ipod.
Thanks in advance.

I was gonna vote Sennheiser just because it is good (understatement), but when I read that Grado does not allow me as a Dutchman to buy its phones I am angry
Can I vote twice for Sennheiser?
I own a HD580, an it has been worth its money; my music has never sounded so transparant and reveiling.
I just love Sennheiser.

Kan ik 'm ook als Nederlander zijnde niet kopen?
Wat dan?
What are you saying?
I can't buy this Headphone either because we're from Holland?
Why is that?

Having owned a hi-end pair of Sennheiser's they are great, but be sure you have a headphone amp with LOTS of gain....

Ok, I'll say it. I have the Sennheiser HD600 and while I like them a lot, even my my GradoLabs SR125s (at half the price) have this magical quality that the HD600s can't compete with. There is something just so fantastic about GradoLabs's headphones. They have this wide open, 3 dimensional sound stage that I've never heard another headphone capture. It has made me forever spoiled.
The RS1 is their flagship model and will no doubt be $600+, much more expensive than the Sennheisers. Is there any reason why you haven't considered the RS2? It is usually at least several hundred dollars cheaper and still has amazing frequency response. See if you can find a local dealer that carries them to listen for yourself. This could be a problem though, because GradoLabs is a small, family owned business and their distribution channels around the world are probably nowhere near as comprehensive as Sennheiser's.

I'm in Tokyo and had no problem buying Grados - only the SR 80s, but they're fine for listening to CDs. I just did a Google search and bought from a place in New York that had the best price. If you you want I can hunt out the site for you.
I'm sure the Sennheisers are great too. Is there no way you can A/B them both?

There is nothing much that beats Grado.
And i´m shure that Grado´s build quality is better.
I have Sennheiser hd-265 and i had to make new kabel connections after 2 years, because the way they are build really sucks.
I allso have Grado SR60. So simple and (ugly) they are but they really WORK, and the sound is fantastic.
And this is their smallest model.
I would go for the Grado´s anytime.

I own a pair of HD600 and they are fabulous. But on the other hand, having headphones of such a high quality level can be a MINUS with an Ipod. I mean, RS1/HD650 heaphones are like VERY precise speakers that will reveal any defaults of a recording ... or of the equipement used for playback. So if your Ipod is gonna be used for MP3 ... it might be a painfull experience. But for production, it's great.
If you can stretch the money, get to listen to some electrostatics Stax (not the electret) hearspeakers. But it'a bit expensive.

Can I point out that Grado's tend to have a deliberately tailored frequency response. They always sound as if they have an old fashioned loudness contour switched in. Impressive maybe, but ultimately fatiguing and even more of a disaster for monitoring than most headphones.

I love sennhesier hd600. Grado is made for listening and not monitoring. They have quality that makes music sound great! This is not what you want to monitor with
With these headphones you will need headphone amp. This is not an option, this is a must! When you experience the headphones with and without you will see.
