Popular free sampler is Shortcircuit. Simple, but has all the typical functionality and can load up to 128 samples.

As to sample packs... searching for free samples over internet is something on which you spend years

Luckily there are some places with dozens of free sample links. IMO this is more than you will ever need or can handle.

SampleTank 2 Free - comes with free instruments, can load instruments, 32-bit only

SampleTank 3 Free - comes with free instruments, expanding library, 64-bit only

Kontakt Player (free) - nice but has a time limit

Alchemy Player (free) - supports SFZ

Plogue Sforzando (free) - very nice SFZ sampler

Many sample libraries, free or payware-are made for Kontakt, some I have downloaded, and was able to use them in Shortcircuit as they had wav files, of course I had to load it all manually, and it still isn't the same. Some Kontakt stuff didn't have any wav's, just that nki stuff.

Kontakt has a lot of added value concerning number of unique and fascinating third party sound packs, if you want to go beyond standard set / shop for expansions, there's pretty much no competition. If you don't care about this, Kontakt is no fun to program your own patches, unless you learn scripting, which is somewhat cryptic at first.

UVI Workstation is worth checking out. Last time I checked (which was a long time ago) it was free and had sample packs available for purchase.

I myself prefer shortcircuit (free or commercial).
