I also think it would be cool to use a synth that's still capable but more specialized. Like a cylindrical drum physical modeller. There hasn't been a comp like that, save for Mr. Alias.

Idunno. After 32 OSCs which have been mostly middle-complexity subtractive or hybrid synths, I think we could mix it up a little :)
The issue really isn't the lack of desire to mix it up... it's more the lack of options, and ideally one that doesn't cut the Mac users out. TripleCheese, Digits, a handful of FM synths (some of which were decidedly not subtractive) have all been used. I don't think anyone has the desire to build a very simple synth except possibly be applicable to OSC, as you say. The only other issue is percussion... it's fine to have a unique synth, but if it can't do percussion at all, it limits not only the quality of entries but the number of people who care to join. And to have a mono synth is really just annoying, it can "easily" but tediously be worked around with a piz midi channelizer or other methods and multiple instances, that you have to keep in sync. But for what? It just ends up being irritating rather than "challenging".

Anyway, if you wanted to build a cross-platform synth like you describe, I bet you could get it in the OSC, no problem. :)

The hard truth is, we're eventually going to run out of synths. New free synths don't seem to be created as much and as often as they used to be. And most of the ones out there are so unstable that they're not worth the trouble.

The OSC, unless we either go into extreme territory or duplicate past synths, is on borrowed time.

If you think I'm kidding, show me all the free synths out there that are good that we haven't already done.

Have you tried any of the HGFortune synths? They get a lot of love on KVR and elsewhere, despite being SynthEdit. There are quite a few freebies... maybe all of them now? I've never personally loaded one up and, far as I can tell, none have made it into OSC.

Right... between these, demos, specials, Synth1, the BSE and Taron's creation, there will be plenty for some time to come. :) I, for one, relish another CM challenge or Beat Mag challenge. Maybe even an all-out: use any synth or effect from CM (still no samples). And there are plenty of good free synths that were early OSCs which most current OSCers didn't get a chance to use.

Agreed, that would be awesome! :hyper:

Speaking of Beat, there's Nuklear solo http://www.hamburg-audio.com/index.php?nav=3003&lang=GB... free for Studio One users, both of us in OSC :P , but there's also supposedly a Beat edition floating about out there. It's cross platform, far as I can tell. But, of course, mono. On the bright side, it's a Pulsar Train Synth, so we could have another round of railroad themed tracks.

The HG Fortune synths were the first ones I downloaded when I first started doing this in 2013. Most of them, with bridging, worked fairly well. Nothing major. Just some VST connection losses but no big crashes. God rest his soul, the man was a genius. I still have X-Wof 6 on my PC because it truly was too good to lose.

Still, there just aren't that many synths out there. We're going to eventually run out as free devlopment isn't what it used to be.

Nope, we're not going to run out. 8)

We've explored this discussion a few times before. Just be prepared for anything. We will probably feature synthedit stuff in the future, as long as people still recommend them.

Just relax please, because next month is January, and you know what that means.

Agreed on the percussion front, any synth to be considered should at least have pitch to envelope. Analog hats do require a bunch of pulses, but you can play a chord if the synth lacks oscillators. And you're right, being a monosynth would indeed be more a pain in the ass than a creativity-inspiring limitation. Still, we've gotta do something to mix this thing up IMO. More FM/PM and oddities.

Not so fair to mac users though (depending on your definition of fair).

Just yesterday...I downloaded HG-Fortune synth pack from archive.org page. Yet..to test them...though.

They are truly some of the most unusual synths ever made with a sound of their own. You can pick them out from a mile away. Great for atmospheric stuff.
