I was bored so I randomly picked some to have a read. It's weird but in 2002/2003 the rating system was great.

But now in 2004 everything is a 10 or 9 for most of the stuff.

I am a newbie well vst's anyway and I wonder if there is a better system? What about having five instead of 10?

I've never paid much attention to the ratings, found that too many seemed arbitrary. Presets would get a low rating, for instance, but nothing in the review made any mention of presets, that kind of thing.

I've always assumed the rule that you must own something before you can review precludes much in the way of negative reviews. It's unlikely that the majority of paying customers are unhappy with their purchase. So I'd guess 1 in 20 maybe are going to be critical, if even that.

The most info on offer here appears in the reviews of freeware as a result of the rule.

As well, many reviews seem to be added as a form of reward/compliment to developers for excellent product, good business practices, etc, to boost their profile. Naturally, gushing ensues.

Cheers,
Steve

ratings are over rated....
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Ratings are meaningless because every reviewer has their own scale. One person might give a ten if there's nothing wrong, but another might give a five, and reserve the other five for "magnificent" "awesome" "superb" etc etc etc.

However, they're kinda handy as a quick summary of the written review, so I suppose they're ok. :?

Kim.

just make 11 available, that would solve the problem...

maybe......

but I think rating is much depending on the individual taste.
Some ratings are interesting, though, because the give some additional information about handling, cpu usage etc.

The overall points are just a nice addon picture.

it's usually that people review new products within a couple of weeks of owning them and are therefore still knocked out by their new toy, hence over-rating it. Ideally reviews should only be submitted when the user has had it for a couple of months and the honeymoon period has worn off, but of course there would be no way to implement that.

in which case just do what I do and don't read the reviews unless you're really bored and feel like pissing someone off by voting that their review wasn't useful to you...

Believe it or not – there is an anti rating movement – or there was at one time  :-o

I actually got a no this was not helpful when I rated too high & tooo low  :?

I think the ratings is a dangers game – you should rate with caution :hyper:

In fact the ratings should come with a rating scale

Like if you rate to low you will get 0 points if you rate too high you will get 0 points

If you rate in the middle you get 100 points.

Another way would be to rate the word count

A full utilisation of allowed words = 100 points

Less than 15 words = zero points and an instant ban

Sorry I cannot take the rating thing as serious any more – been down that road a couple of times – the best advice is....

....Write your review from your perspective – don’t try and be a middleman (write from the users perspective) not as in a journalistic approach – be honest and to the point with your view, how you find the tool you have used.
