Hi all,

I am a man of very very little money, but when I got my tax return, I figured I'd treat myself to something. Thing is, it's only "fake" money (I have debts to cover off! Bah!) so I still have to limit myself.

I've always wanted a set of brushed drums, and I've had very sketchy success (ie. I've had failure) finding a free set (soundfont, .wav, or otherwise) with enough realism and layers.

I stumbled accross THESE reasonably-priced soundfonts, and the Session Brush near the bottom of the page seemed promising.

Now, I don't expect a kazillion layers, and to be honest, 16/44.1 is fine for my modest needs.

THING IS-- with my WEE bit of money, there are still other developers who have various budget-priced VST and VSTi that I'm interested in, and they're people I'd like to support with what little money I have. SO, if anybody has a suggestion for something as close to free as possible that will still work for a hobbyist like me, I'm all ears. Then I can spend the $30 on one of the other developers I had in mind. Otherwise, if you have information beyond what I already have access to (ie. the website), and this is money well spent, I'll probably purchase it.

I realize it's not a lot of money and it might seem like a silly question to some people, but in my current situation, every $ counts!

Thanks,
Greg

I'll give this one gratuitous bump (though I DO apologize) and then assume that nobody has ever used these samples.

Hi Greg

I've been using this sf for some time and I find it to sound quite good, for the price that is.

As you mentioned yourself you there are not alot of velocity layers, 3 or 4 at most for snares and toms. For kicks, hats and cymbals only one.

If you intend to use it in sfz or sfz+ there is one nasty issue you should be aware of: The velocity of the snares come out all wrong over a certain level.

I have converted the sf to DR-008 kits using Awave Studio. By doing this those issues disappeared, so I guess it's a sfz/sfz+ thing. Also loading them directly into my Soundblaster Audigy work perfectly fine (not that too many want that anyway  ).

The following is cut out of the sf's docs:

Instrument Details

Kick: Pearl Kick Drum
Snare1: Cherry Snare, with brushes, hits, swirls, taps
Snare2: Walnut Snare, with brushes, hits, swirls, taps
Sidestick 1: Cherry Snare
Toms: Pearl, with brushes, 10”, 12”, 15”
Hats: Ufip 14”, with brushes, Closed, Foot, Open
Ride: Ufip 20” Riderim & Ridebell, with brushes
Crash: Paiste, with brushes
Splash: Ufip 10”, with brushes

Program Details

0 Walnut Snare
1 Walnut Verb1
2 Walnut Verb2
3 Cherry Snare
3 Cherry Verb1
3 Cherry Verb2

Hope this have been of some help.

There is an mp3 demo. It sounds quite good. I've been thinking of getting this also.

Rene has said he has quite a few of the Sonic Implants soundfonts, you might mention this in the RGC forum (if you haven't already).

these drum soundfonts are very usable for that price. I can confirm that, too.

I guess I'll do that! It's the same issue with Session Drums 1 (and probably Session Drums 2, although I haven't got that one).

Thanks for the replies, guys. I will buy the CD! I probably won't bother with the sf2 (except for instant gratification), but will try my hand (I keep saying this) at an sfz format mapping. Since the kicks are only one layer, I may go to kick samples from another set (ie. Kingston or Natural Studios), and if you happen to have those kicking around, I'll gladly share the mapping with you.

[edit: just noticed 'available formats' - .gig and .sf2 -- I'm not familiar with .gig files; do they include the individual .wavs from which I could roll my own mapping in sfz? Or is there a way to dissolve sf2 into individual .wav files?]

Both .gig and .sf2 files includes the wavs. You will, however, need some software to extract them (wavs) from the files. As I said earlier I use Awave Studio from FMJ-Software ($139.95) to do this. If you're on a budget I guess that's a bit expensive. You could try out the demo and see if that makes the trick.

For .sf2 there is always Vienna Soundfont Studio, which is free, but I think you need a soundfont compatible soundcard (Soundblaster Live! or Audigy) to use that.

Cheers, I'll look into it! Thanks for the reply.

Finding a good brush kit is a challenge, I know, I've looked. I am pretty certain, but not positive, that there is a brush set in PlugSound Free. It's a VST, of couse, not a Soundfont. In addition to Sonic Implants, you may also want to check out http://www.wizoosounds.com and http://www.sonomic.com . Two sites where you can buy only the samples you want and listen to demos before you buy.

Good luck.

im gonna get dfh superior. expensive though

Thanks, eDrummist. I've checked out the set in Plugsound and it's not quite to my needs. I DID remember a brushed kit on a CM cover-disc that I could roll into a sampler mapping for now.

The Session Brush still has its appeal, but my search isn't quite over yet. I was "this" close to buying it before I noticed it didn't come with raw .wav files. Thanks for those links, I'll check'em out.

Gadzooks...

Sorry to bump the thread again--

You know your search is destined to be difficult when you type "brush drum soundfont" into Google and your own K-v-R thread is the 3rd hit.

Wizoo seemed to have a few things that might have worked... except that their website didn't. Stupid busted-ass website. I even registered as a user, thinking that maybe it's just 'cause I wasn't logged in. AND tried using IE instead of Opera. Still no dice.

Sonomic also did not have anything that fit the bill.

Suddenly Session Brush is looking mighty tempting.

Plugsound drums (not free) comes with a very nice Brush Kit. I used it on a track you can hear on my site - Flashback (though I replaced the kick - i hate jazz kicks). Also alot of other useful kits in there... Not sure what its street price is nowadays...
