Ten Bagatelles

This is a set of ten short sketches made while playing around with DFX Transverb and making patches. Each piece uses a different patch and the mood is set by my response to the patch. They are intended as musical conversations between myself and transverb so most have a loosely contrapuntal form. Each piece is one minute long.
When I paint I tend not to use frames or regular edges and I wanted each piece to be similar in that each piece has no clearly defined beginning or ending using standard musical conventions like fade ins/outs, intros or conclusions. I just set EnergyXT to record for a minute and with some even began playing before pressing record and most just cut off when it gets to the end of the minute. Think of them as if you are just catching a snapshot of a conversation between two people.
They could even be looped to continue playing indefinately.

I quite like these.
I have them streaming in order, and they work nicely as one extended piece.
I'm partial to #s 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Some of the transitions between tracks are a bit two sudden when streamed (owing to them being seperate pieces presumably). A few seem to end mid-note. Love to hear them made to fit together seamlessly.
Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for your comments
As for them going together - they are unified in terms of their conception and probably do flow together fairly well though it needn't be in numerical order - that means nothing.
Sorry - they ended when the minute was up. That was the timeframe I set myself as a "discipline". I've written poetry like this too; setting myself limits based on different conventions than those belonging to the form itself. For instance, one week I wrote a poem each morning in the first minute of waking up - just capturing impressions and feelings and leaving it there..unfinished in a conventional manner but finished within the framework I set myself.aMUSEd wrote:shamann wrote: A few seem to end mid-note.

Hey Amused,
I'm on dialup so I only took the time to listen to the 1st piece, Beautiful!
What kind of piano (or sampleset) is that?

The piano is one of the patches in my Korg N364 workstation - it has some nice piano sounds (this one is "stereo keys"). Some of the later pieces also use a guitar patch ("flamenco").Gymnopedies wrote:Hey Amused,

The first piece uses the "Atonalise" patch from the 2nd bank I made for DFX Transverb - this one just adds a very subtle slightly detuned delay to give each note a closely following detuned ghost haunting each note.

Limitations can bring about new ideas; I like the concept of this much and right now I am listening to them in the numerical order, but you are right they work just as well in random order.
Always good to hear you play the piano

Thanks - I'm just a beginner (ex guitarist) with a duff left hand but its nice to feel myself playing what I feel, if you know what I mean, even if it's a bit clunky.Mystahr wrote:Limitations can bring about new ideas; I like the concept of this much and right now I am listening to them in the numerical order, but you are right they work just as well in random order.

Hope you enjoy them all - lots of different moods

i like the concept very much.
these little bagatelles are quite enjoyable.
the music you play is really great.
production-wise, i'm not always convinced. there are some strange, incomfortable gliches and/or distortion noises.
however, this details doesn't spoil the pleasure.
inspiring.

Thanks for the comments. I'm afraid until my new supercharged PC is finished there's not a lot I can do about audio glitches. I'm keeping to just a couple of tracks and bouncing to audio a lot as it is but my old PC with it's SBLive and Athlon 500 just isn't up to expressive playing and tends to spunk out if I play too fast. Not long to wait now I hope - just waiting for a special cooler to arrive, that's all.Wôpelkà wrote:production-wise, i'm not always convinced. there are some strange, incomfortable gliches and/or distortion noises.
Still - I tend to treat glitches and accidents in the manner of a raku potter - they are part of life and therefore why try to smooth them over.

Although I'd like to hear a finished piece from you, I still think this is an interesting idea. From what I gather, you're trying to sort of capture the present and immortalize just a few bits of human spontaniety.
It's funny, I was just thinking the other day of a possible "concept" album featuring short (0:30 - 1:30), but finished electronic works, but not a compilation (The perfect format for my never-ceasing attention span).
Expression by form...hadn't stumbled upon that one yet.
