What do you guys think about subscriptions?

A couple of random thoughts/points...
1:
Many years ago, I had a subscription to a magazine (Punch). After a few years, 3 months into the year, it was sold off. All the old writers were dumped and a new batch brought in. The tone of the magazine changed completely in a matter of 2 issues. The remaining 7 issues of that year's sub went straight to the bin. I didn't renew.
Moral: you may start out with one thing and end up with another.
2:
Most, if not all, "subscriptions" are rentals. Like a hire shop, where you'd go for a hedge trimmer for that once a year gardening job, or for a car, that you'd rent for a day or three.
Subs are good for pros, because they just dump the cost on their clients.
No good for non-pros, unless the cost of ownership is really high - eg, Eastwest. Slate, and the like, well, there's no point.
3:
If you were buying a toolkit for the home, would you buy a box filled with a hundred and one tools you'll never use? Or would you buy the few you need? So it is with plugins. You buy an eq from one vendor, a compressor from another, and reverb from a third, tools that fit your needs, not tools to find a use for.
Just my tuppence worth.

And no, no subscriptions for me, (although I am seriously thinking about the EastWest deal, so I can get my hands on Hollywood everything, Ra and Silk).
