HitFilm vs Shotcut vs DaVinci, what would you recommend ?
Last year, i installed DaVinci, but i didn't find it very intuive from the start (and i'm not a newbie, i'm quite used to Premiere, Vegas, Magix Deluxe, etc)...
Resolve seems a bit limited : is it the case, or just a wrong impression ?

If you have any issues with video performance try to convert your videos into an intermediate codec, like prores, for editing (FFMPEG works great for this if you're not afraid of the terminal

) From my experience this helps A LOT! Bear in mind that prores files can get pretty big, but USB 3.0 is fast enough to work from an external hard drive if your internal storage is limited.

For simple editing I started with Lightworks. It works a bit different than other editors, but once you got your head wrapped around it's pretty efficient. Unfortunately you're limited to 720p export in the free version, unless you're uploading straight to vimeo. That's why I now use Resolve. Even though it started as a coloring tool, they added lots of editing functionality since version 11 and you can export up to 1080p for free.

I like Vegas. I haven't looked around at some other products recently so I don't really know what else is out there now though.

Back when I was looking around more, Vegas (even the lower tiered version) was a lot more "editor" and a lot less "click a button and get a birthday video" than some others. I think you do have to dig in to get the most out of it. There's a lot of stuff in there that maybe so obvious.

If you go with Vegas, maybe frequent the Creative Cow Vegas forums. That's where the ninjas are, or at least used to be.

I also am looking to get a video editor to produce music videos of some of my songs. I previously used Win Movie Maker successfully but it took a ridiculous amount of time because every time I added a photo or video, it changed the syncing with the lyrics on the timeline in other places and I constantly had to readjust.

I want pictures showing on the screen to match up exactly in time with the lyrics as they are sung. So I need a program which will allow me to lock everything in place as I add to or edit the story board. Then I can adjust as I want to without it doing it automatically for me.

Does anyone know which video editors will give me this option? I'm currently using Win 10. Thanks.

I really have to go back to Vegas as being the best editor for music videos. Going way back to the beginning, there were separate Vegas versions for video editing and multitrack audio production. As a result, the current version of Vegas has audio editing in it's DNA in a way that other editors do not. It is particularly good for cutting to musical beats and bars at a predefined tempo. Even when Premiere Pro offers similar functionality (and I use Premiere professionally all the time), Vegas is better in this regard.

The full version is pretty expensive. If you buy the lower tier version it's still pretty great but if you do anything complex at all you may run into the track limit pretty as you stack up track layers with videos, titles, graphics, overlays, etc, etc.

It used to be 10 video tracks when I had that version awhile back. Not sure what it is now. 10 sounds like a lot, but when you start stacking up graphics and things, not really. The other minor downside was that it didn't sync to MTC.

+1 for Vegas, quick to learn and the audio side is top-notch to.
i have tried premiere and though it looks slick i don't get on with it so much.. and avid, i don't have the time to learn that stuff : )

Once you know one NLE, they are all easy to learn, pretty much like normal DAWs are all related. Media Composer is pretty expensive, and not really targeted to hobbyists anyway.

One really great thing about Vegas though is that it started as an audio editor, so it uses VST (and still, DX) audio plugins. Editing the audio side of your video in Vegas is like editing in any professional daw, including it having (at least in Pro) clip FX.

No idea how many other video NLE's use VST plugins if any, or can do multitrack recording, or even have mixers with aux sends and all that. The ones I tried awhile back were really basic on the audio front. You never have to export anything audio from Vegas to edit it.

that's exactly the reason i DO use it. it has the benefits of fill featured daw and a very fast video editing and burning app. it works well both ways. i have made videos several times with it and got exactly the results i was after.

I don't doubt it wouldn't work both ways, Vegas is one of the top choices of the industry right behind the big three, just saying that VST plugins, aux sends and multitrack recording mentioned by Lawrence aren't especially useful features if you just comp a video to an already mastered stereo track.

Recommend me a video editor (win 7 64bit laptop)
