best $150 headphones, for monitoring

I'm wondering what the next step up is from the AKG 240s. I like them in all respects, but I wonder if extra cost is justified.

One irritation with the 240s is that the plastic outer cover on both speakers has come loose. It doesn't matter a great deal, but the build is a little flimsy.

My local store have a wall with all major "studio" headphones for testing. I made some 2h a/b testing. Initially I liked to have closed ones for recording with a mic. Some Sennheizer (can't remember the model, but costed about 270 euros) was my preferred choice but a bit too expensive so AKG 271s was my selected pair. Finaly I got AKG 240s. Regarding DT-100, IMHO you might look like the Beatles with them but they also sound like the Beatles - very much mid, no bass. I don't like the bass to be emphased but it got to be there and the DT-100 just do not deliver. Sure they are excellent in some context not as general purpose cans.

I chose Sennheiser HD580 half a month ago (for about 150€) and haven't regret it. Can wear them all day (actually, I haven't used my Stereo since O_o )

Yes, my HD580s make virtually every stereo, monitors or headphones out there sound bad! 
Worth every penny.

Yes, been using these well over two years. They have a slight boost in the low end that gives a better sense of bass energy than most cans, which is why I chose them. Very accurate mids and highs. The enclosure is very comfortable, but if like me you wear glasses, all closed cups squeak against the side arms of your specs. The Isolation is almost perfect and the stereo image if faultless.chagzuki wrote:Anyone tried any HD265s?
Purists probably prefer the 850s for a flat response, but I find the 256s, now I'm used to them, give a better judgement of the mix when balancing mid/high against lows. I use TR8s for my main mix. Cans late at night and always for checking for high end residuals, the HDs go up to 33KHz.
