If Roland made a D50 vst emulation, would you purchase it?

I think my preferred way of going through these banks is to load a few banks at a time, and copy individual patches I really like into one or more "Favourites" banks compiled from them.
There is some nice stuff in there indeed, I do like the D50, and would certainly buy the plugin, if only they would actually sell it to people...

i just created a Favorites bank too (later maybe also additional banks) where i will copy my favorite patches from multiple banks.
As i mentioned earlier (and like it is mentioend in the plugin manual) it is possoble to use keyboard shortcuts like e.g. CTRL+C and CTRL+V for copy/paste patches between banks.
With drag & drop you could also sort patches within a new favorites bank.
The browser also has a "Delete" button to delete the currently selected bank. That way after having copied the favorite patches you could delete the banks no longer needed in the banks list.

It's also useful that (on OSX at least) you can load multiple banks in one go - so hit "Load", and select multiple bank files from the file selector - they'll all be loaded in one operation.

In Windows 10 selecting and loading multiple BIN files (banks) seems to work too.beely wrote:It's also useful that (on OSX at least) you can load multiple banks in one go - so hit "Load", and select multiple bank files from the file selector - they'll all be loaded in one operation.

I could confirm this with the VST2 plugin in Live 9.7.2 64-bit at Windows 10 64-bit. Did not notice it yet as i normally use a MIDI keyboard to play the patches.Roneo wrote:For some reason when I load the patches from beely, rolands plugin keyboard doesn't work , only FL controller works. How can I solve this?
With the factory presets of the D-50 plugin the plugin keyboard seems to work properly here.

Besides the problem with the plugin keyboard mentioned above with the imported banks from beely i just noticed that the master tuning is set to 427 Hz where the factory presets are set to 440 Hz.
I'll manually correct that with the patches i already added to a new favorites bank.

I've noticed the keyboard thing too, don't know what's going on there but I'll have a look.Ingonator wrote:Besides the problem with the plugin keyboard mentioned above with the imported banks from beely i just noticed that the master tuning is set to 427 Hz where the factory presets are set to 440 Hz.

I'll have a look at the tuning thing as well, it seems to be the only parameter not coming across for some reason.
Edit: Ok, the "Master Tune" parameter in the patch block doesn't actually exist on the D50, and it's not in the sysex spec or memory layout (hence why it was being reset to 0), so will need to work out where it's stored in the plugin bank file and always set it to the default 440 tuning there...
Edit2: Ok, looks like it's stored in the Patch "extension bytes", and is a simple enough fix...
Edit3: Ok, the master tune issue is fixed. Looking at the keyboard issue to see whether that's anything on my side, before re-converting the big file dump.
Edit4: Ok, found the thing that was causing the keyboard issue, and fixed it.
I'm just going to add recursively folder processing to make it much faster to reconvert the whole lot, and then I will re-upload the fixed version shortly...
As requested, this is the bank from http://www.thhe.dk/Roland_D-50.htm: (Many of these patches are in the previous archive as well.)

Many thanks for the tutorial video. I just posted it in the other D-50 thread where KVR member Caine123 asked for D-50 tutorials:

A demo and download i had posted in the other new thread about D-50 tutorials:
Ingonator wrote:FWIW i just started creating my own patches with the D-50 plugin but i guess i just scratched the surface of what might be possible. I did not try much of programming when i had the real D-50 back in 2004...).
Starting from a Synth Brass patch that i created from scratch using only the synth part (no PCMs) of the D-50 plugin i started replacing one of the 4 partials with a PCM sample.
For that i selected PCM sample "119 TronStr" that is a sustained Tron sample included with the additional 28 V-Synth VC-1 D-50 expansion card PCMs that were not found with the original D-50.
I called the patch "Tronic Brass 1" and here is an audio demo of that patch:
IW - D-50 VST - Tronic Brass 1 - Demo 1
Modwheel was used for adding vibrato to teh patch and aftertouch for increasing filter cutoff with the synth parts (PCMs do not use a filter).
All built-in FXs like EQ, Chorus and Reverb were used with this but no external FXs.
With typical "LA Synthesis" usually you used a short attack PCM sample and the synth part for the sustained part of teh patch. As teh more "percussive" part of my pathc is done with the synth part and the sustained part with a PCM sample it is more like "reverse LA Synthesis".
Ingonator wrote: Hi,
nice to hear you like the patch. Currently in my newly created bank i only got 3 patches. The first was the edited "Stereo Polysynth" where i added the built-in EQ to add more low end, the second a Synth Brass patch with 4 partials (no PCMs used) and the 3rd the patch from the audio demo where i replaced one partial with the Tron PCM sample (some other changes were done in that patch too compared to teh "pure" Synth Brass").
Here is a download for the current bank:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/532 ... er%201.zip
Here at Windows 10 the file is located at C:\ProgramData\Roland Cloud\D-50
Anyway for importing loading the bank it seems to be necessray to use the "Load" button in the bank/patch browser to load the bank in the plugin. To just tcopy the file to the folder mentioned above does not seem to work.

Ok, here's an updated archive of the CultofD50.org banks, with fixed conversions.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/owdr8l3ulp0s3 ... n.zip?dl=1
These work fine, tuning is fine, and no longer kills the keyboard (caused by non-terminated name strings in the plugin's patch name field). Converting the preset banks results in verified bit identical BIN files comparing the presets banks exported by the plugin, so the files should now be fine.
If anyone wants any other D50 sysex banks converted, add them to this thread or via PM. Given this archive already done probably covers the vast majority of the D50 banks out there, I doubt there's sufficient demand for me to go to the time and effort of hardening it up and putting the conversion tool on the web...

Just downloaded and will check the update ASAP.
UPDATE:
With the update of the banks i already checked yesterday so far it looks like the plugin keyboard works now and also the master tune seems to be corrected.
